By your fortune, I never thought death would draw near you,

for in death's breast you inspire more dread than death.

It struck you not from where you feared its arrows

against you, nor from where it grows strong and assails.

But it shot from an unguarded moment never struck before

in one like you by an archer of death, shooting to destroy.

I never thought sickness would reach in you what I now see,

for you are time's tried and proven remedy.

Nor did I imagine that upon a sickbed

I would see a mountain in you, turned by hands.

I thought you safe from calamities, for surely

they turn aside from everyone I deem secure.

by your two hands' gifts, which cannot themselves be bestowed.

I did not know calamity was gathering for a leap,

or that death's pregnant camels were near to calving bereavement.

Until a night laid me low through losing you,

and from it an oppressive day of sorrow was born.

a lament—but in it Hashim is mourned.

    Silence, death-crier! Your announcement destroys.

May you bite rock—rather, may gravel fill your mouth!

Your tongue! Ah, may your uvula dry, or become

moistened by serpents' saliva, not your own.

Gently! Ease the last breath of souls

that fluttered in anguish over what you conceal and declare.

sniffed the earth that covered him, and revelation sobbed:

around whom? Has one of their favored ones disappeared?

You who stand in awe of the angels—no, rather he is the one

through whom they all draw near to God among you.

have lifted, had God not been within them.

with drink for the children of hope: has it begun to run dry?

to stand in rain's stead when the year was barren?

for your keen-edged Mashrafi sword has passed beyond you.

for people are nothing but censurers and reproachers.
