شاطَرتَ داهِيَةَ السُوّاسِ ثَروَتَهُ

شاطَرتَ داهِيَةَ السُوّاسِ ثَروَتَهُ

وَلَم تَخَفهُ بِمِصرٍ وَهوَ واليها

وَلَم تَخَفهُ بِمِصرٍ وَهوَ واليها

You took half the wealth of the shrewdest of statesmen,

You have surpassed the cunning of the crafty minister in his wealth

And did not fear him in Egypt, though he was its governor.

Yet you did not conceal it in Egypt while you were its governor

وَأَنتَ تَعرِفُ عَمراً في حَواضِرِها

وَأَنتَ تَعرِفُ عَمراً في حَواضِرِها

وَلَستَ تَجهَلُ عَمراً في بَواديها

وَلَستَ تَجهَلُ عَمراً في بَواديها

And you know Amr in its cities,

And you know Omar in its cities

And you are not ignorant of Amr in its deserts.

And you are not ignorant of Omar in its deserts

لَم تُنبِتِ الأَرضُ كَاِبنِ العاصِ داهِيَةً

لَم تُنبِتِ الأَرضُ كَاِبنِ العاصِ داهِيَةً

يَرمي الخُطوبَ بِرَأيٍ لَيسَ يُخطيها

يَرمي الخُطوبَ بِرَأيٍ لَيسَ يُخطيها

The earth has brought forth no master strategist like Ibn al-As,

The earth did not grow a cunning one like the son of Al-As with opinion that cannot be crossed

Who takes aim at calamities with judgment that never misses them.

So he did not insist on a trick in what you ordered him

فَلَم يُرِغ حيلَةً فيما أَمَرتَ بِهِ

فَلَم يُرِغ حيلَةً فيما أَمَرتَ بِهِ

وَقامَ عَمرٌو إِلى الأَجمالِ يُزجيها

وَقامَ عَمرٌو إِلى الأَجمالِ يُزجيها

So he sought no ruse concerning what you commanded,

And Omar stood to the camels to drive them away

And Amr rose and went to the camels, driving them onward.

You did not decrease any governor among them though his wealth multiplied and spread through the land multiplying

وَلَم تُقِل عامِلاً مِنها وَقَد كَثُرَت

وَلَم تُقِل عامِلاً مِنها وَقَد كَثُرَت

أَموالُهُ وَفَشا في الأَرضِ فاشيها

أَموالُهُ وَفَشا في الأَرضِ فاشيها

And you exempted no official from it once there had been an increase

In his wealth and word of it had spread throughout the land.
