You built the foundations of your rule upon virtue,

and so you had a bond of trust among the peoples.

Why, then, do I see virtue's forelock turned gray,

with weakness besetting it and sickness creeping in?

I fear for you a stumble after a rise,

for the rule of oppressors does not endure.

You squandered a friendship; had you honored its pledges,

no strife would have arisen between the two nations.

After neutrality—may God not uphold its pledge—

and after festering wounds, can there be concord?

If amicable understanding means our death,

then no blame falls on one who seeks life.
