ماwhat ليwith me أَرىI see الأَكمامَthe flower buds لاnot تُفَتِّحُopen
وَالرَوضَand the garden لاnot يَذكوgrows fragrant وَلاnor يُنَفِّحُwafts perfume
Why do I see the flower buds not opening,
Why do I see sleeves unrolling,
and the garden neither fragrant nor wafting perfume,
While the meadow awakens not, nor exhales fragrance?
وَالطَيرَand the birds لاnot تَلهوfrolic بِتَدويمِهاin their circling flight
فيin مُلكِهاtheir realm الواسِعِvast أَوor تَصدَحُsing aloud
and the birds not frolicking in their circling flight
Birds frolic not in their vast kingdom,
in their vast realm, or bursting into song;
Nor burst into joyous song.
وَالنيلَand the Nile لاnot تَرقُصُdance أَمواهُهُits waters
فَرحىjoyful وَلاnor يَجريflows بِهاwith them الأَبطَحُthe pebbled riverbed
and the Nile, its waters not dancing
The Nile’s waters dance not
in joy, nor its pebbled channel flowing with them;
To turn the mill, nor flow through the valley.
وَالشَمسَand the sun لاnot تُشرِقُrises وَضّاءَةًradiant
تَجلوdispels هُمومَcares الصَدرِthe breast أَوor تَنزِحُdraws away
and the sun not rising radiant,
The sun rises not radiant
clearing away the breast's cares or drawing them off;
To dispel the heart’s gloom and depart.
وَالبَدرَand the full moon لاnot يَبدوappears عَلىupon ثَغرِهِits lips
مِنof بَسَماتِsmiles اليُمنِgood fortune ماthat which يَشرَحُgladdens the heart
and the full moon, whose lips show nothing
The moon shows not on its face
of good fortune's heart-gladdening smiles;
Any smile of good fortune to gladden.
وَالنَجمَand the star لاnot يَزهَرُshines فيin أُفقِهِits horizon
كَأَنَّهُas though it فيin غَمرَةٍdeep water يَسبَحُswims
and the star not shining on its horizon,
The stars bloom not in their horizons,
as though swimming in deep water?
As though swimming in deepest gloom.
أَلَمhas ... not? يَجِئهاcome to them نَبَأٌnews جاءَناcame to us
Has the news that came to us not reached them,
Came there no news to her
that Egypt is free, rejoicing?
That Egypt is free, exulting in joy?
أَصبَحتُI have become لاnot أَدريI know عَلىdespite خِبرَةٍexperience
أَجَدَّتِhave they grown serious? الأَيّامُthe days أَمor تَمزَحُjest
For all my experience, I now do not know
I know not if days of truth have dawned
whether the days have grown serious or are jesting.
Or if jesting continues still.
أَمَوقِفٌis this a juncture? لِلجِدِّfor earnest action نَجتازُهُwe pass through it
أَمor ذاكَthat لِلّاهيfor one who plays بِناwith us مَسرَحُa stage
Is this a serious juncture we are passing through,
Is this a pause for seriousness we pass,
or a stage for one who toys with us?
Or a stage where jesters still play?
أَلمَحُI glimpse لِاِستِقلالِناof our independence لَمعَةًa glimmer
فيin حالِكِpitch-black الشَكِّdoubt فَأَستَروِحُso I find relief
I glimpse a glimmer of our independence
I glimpse a ray of hope for our independence,
in the pitch-blackness of doubt, so I breathe easier;
Then doubt descends and I despair.
وَتَطمِسُand blots out الظُلمَةُdarkness آثارَهاits traces
فَأَنثَنيso I turn back أُنكِرُI deny ماwhat أَلمَحُI glimpse
and darkness blots out its traces,
Darkness blankets its traces,
so I turn back, denying what I glimpse.
I deny what I just glimpsed.
قَدindeed حارَتِhave become bewildered الأَفهامُminds فيover أَمرِهِمtheir affair
إِنif لَمَّحواthey hint بِالقَصدِat the intent أَوor صَرَّحواthey speak openly
Minds are bewildered over their affairs,
Minds are confused by their intentions,
whether they hint at their intent or speak plainly.
Be they hints or outright declarations.
فَقائِلٌso one says لاdo not تَعجَلواhurry إِنَّكُمindeed you
مَكانَكُمyour place بِالأَمسِyesterday لَمhave not تَبرَحواyou left
So one says, “Do not hurry: you
One says “Do not rush,
have not left where you stood yesterday.”
For yesterday you stayed put.”
وَقائِلٌand one says أَوسِعhow great بِهاit is خُطوَةًa step
وَراءَهاbeyond it الغايَةُthe goal وَالمَطمَحُand the aspiration
And another says, “What a great step it is!
Another says “Take a bold step forward,
Beyond it lie the goal and the aspiration.”
For beyond it lies your goal and desire.”
وَقائِلٌand one says أَسرَفَwent too far فيin قَولِهِhis statement
هَذاthis هُوَit اِستِقلالُكُمyour independence فَاِفرَحواso rejoice
And another, excessive in his claim, says,
And another says “He went too far
“This is your independence—rejoice!”
In his words. This is your independence, rejoice!”
إِنif تَسأَلواyou ask العَقلَreason يَقُلit says عاهِدواmake a covenant
وَاِستَوثِقواand make certain فيin عَهدِكُمyour covenant تَربَحواyou will profit
If you ask reason, it says, “Make a covenant,
If you ask reason, it says “Be steadfast
and ensure your covenant is secure; you will gain.
And strengthen your covenant, so you may profit.”
وَأَسِّسواand establish داراًa house لِنُوّابِكُمfor your representatives
لِلرَأيِfor opinion فيهاwithin it وَالحِجاand sound judgment أَفسِحواmake room
And establish a house for your representatives;
“Establish a house for your representatives,
make room within it for opinion and sound judgment.
Make room for opinion and argument within it.”
وَلتَذكُرِand let it remember الأُمَّةِthe nation ميثاقَهاits covenant
أَلّاnot to تَرىsee عِزَّتَهاits dignity تُجرَحُbe wounded
And let the nation remember its covenant:
“Let the nation remember its pact
not to see its dignity wounded;
Never to see its glory wounded.”
وَتَنتَخِبand elect صَفوَةَthe best أَبنائِهاof its sons
فَمِنهُمُfor among them المُخلِصُthe devoted one وَالمُصلِحُand the reformer
and let it elect the best of its sons,
“And elect the elite of its sons,
for among them are the devoted and the reformers.
Among them the sincere and reformer.”
وَلِيَتَّقِand let them fear اللَهَGod أُولوthose in charge of أَمرِهاits affairs
أَنlest يُسكِتواthey silence الأَصواتَthe voices أَوor يُرفِحواlavish gifts
And let those who govern it fear God,
“And let the rulers fear God
lest they silence voices or lavish gifts.”
Lest they silence voices or act tyrannically.”
أَوor تَسأَلواyou ask القَلبَthe heart يَقُلit says حاذِرواbeware
وَصابِرواand persevere against أَعداءَكُمyour enemies تُفلِحواyou will succeed
Or if you ask the heart, it says, “Beware,
Or if you ask the heart, it says “Beware
and persevere against your enemies; you will succeed.
And be patient with your enemies, so you may succeed.”
إِنّيindeed I أَرىsee قَيداًa fetter فَلاso do not تُسلِمواsurrender
أَيدِيَكُمyour hands فَالقَيدُfor the fetter لاnot يُسجِجُunclear; probably 'relents'
Indeed, I see a fetter, so do not surrender
“I see a bondage, so do not surrender
your hands, for the fetter does not relent.
Your hands, for shackles do not bend.”
إِنif هَيَّؤوهُthey prepare it مِنfrom حَريرٍsilk لَكُمfor you

If they fashion it for you from silk,
“If they prepare it from silk for you,
it is more grievous, despite its softness.”
It remains soft, but thereby I am slain.”
حَتّامَhow long وَالصَبرُwhile patience لَهُit has غايَةٌa limit
لِغَيرِناfor others besides us مِنfrom بِئرِناour well نَمتَحُwe draw water
How long, though patience has a limit,
“Restrain yourselves, for patience has an end,
shall we draw water from our well for others?
We must not drink forever from our well.”
حَتّامَhow long وَالأَموالُwhile the funds مَشفوهَةٌbeset by demands
نَمنَحُwe give إِلّاexcept مِصرَEgypt ماwhat نَمنَحُwe give
How long, with our funds beset by demands,
“Restrain yourselves, wealth is coveted,
shall we give what we give to everyone but Egypt?
We only grant what we grant to Egypt.”
حَتّامَhow long يُمضيdetermines أَمرَناour affairs غَيرُناothers besides us
وَذاكَand that بِالأَحرارِfor free people لاnot يَملُحُis fitting
How long shall others determine our affairs,
“Restrain yourselves, others decide our affairs,
when that does not befit free people?
And that suits not the free.”
أَساءَdid wrong بَعضُsome الناسِpeople فيtoward بَعضِهِمsome of them
ظَنّاًin suspicion وَقَدand indeed أَمسَواthey entered evening وَقَدand indeed أَصبَحواthey entered morning
Some people have done others wrong
Some people suspected others wrongly,
in their suspicions, evening and morning;
Yesterday eve and again this morn.
فَاِنتَهَزَتso seized أَعداؤُناour enemies نُهزَةًan opportunity
فيناamong us وَماand not كانَتhad been لَهُمto them تَسنَحُpresenting itself
so our enemies seized an opportunity
Our enemies seized the dispute
against us, which had not come their way.
That chanced among us.
فَالرَأيُso the counsel كُلُّall الرَأيِthe counsel أَنthat تُجمِعواyou agree unanimously
فَإِنَّماfor only إِجماعُكُمyour unanimity أَرجَحُweightier
The best counsel of all, then, is that you unite,
The best opinion is you unite,
for it is your unanimity that carries greater weight.
For your consensus is strongest.
وَكُلُّand everyone مَنwho يَطمَعُhopes فيfor صَدعِكُمsplitting you apart
فَإِنَّهُthen indeed he فيagainst صَخرَةٍa rock يَنطَحُbutts his head
And whoever hopes to split you apart
He who seeks to split you
is butting his head against a rock.
Butts his head against a boulder.
أَخشىI fear إِذاif اِستَكثَرتُمُyou have too many بَينَكُمamong yourselves
مِنof قادَةِleaders of الآراءِopinions أَنthat تُفضَحواyou will be disgraced
I fear, if you have too many among you
I fear if you multiply among you
leaders of opinion, that you will be disgraced.
Leaders of opinion, you will be disgraced.
فَلتَقصِدواso be moderate ماas far as اِسطَعتُمُyou can فيهُمُregarding them
فَإِنَّماfor only فيin القِلَّةِsmall numbers المَنجَحُsuccess
So keep their number modest, as far as you can,
So pursue what youexcelled at through them,
for success lies only in small numbers.
For success lies only in fewness.
