    وَأَجَلَّ عيدَ جُلوسِكَ الثَقَلانِ

    The pilgrims and the two sanctuaries praised you;

And humankind and jinn revered the feast of your accession.

You pleased your Lord when you made His path

Safe, and won the blessing of divine approval.

And through the constitution you gathered around you a nation

Of diverse creeds and abundant grudges.

So you came to dwell in hearts and graze upon

Their very cores, and lodge within the inner self.

You tended them until you knew that they

Had reached their full strength over the years.

So you made the people's affairs a matter of mutual counsel,

And established the law of the One, the Judge.

Were they to weigh the armies before witnesses,

The balance's pan would tip beneath your army.

If it wished, it could shake the earth beneath its foes,

Or, if it wished, stun it out of its turning.

They march in rings of iron toward their foes,

As though they were a rampart made of men.

And as though their advance, when the forenoon shines,

Were a torrent of Indian swords and ash-wood spears.

They hurl themselves upon death, yet their ranks,

Despite the charge, are like solid masonry.

Then, when the cannon in battle answer one another

With their roaring, and the two armies grapple,

And when the bombs thunder and explode

Beneath the dust like a volcano erupting,

And when the rifles unleash their fire

Unrestrained, and the causes of death draw near,

You see jinn in the skins of young men,

    And behold hearts of flint.

Command them to plunge through surging seas and blast apart

The lofty mountains with the strength of faith.

Their breasts grew cool, and they rested secure,

When you swore the most binding of oaths.

    هُم يَعرِفونَ شَمائِلَ السُلطانِ

    By God, even without them, they never doubted your truthfulness;

    They know the Sultan's character.

But they have followed a custom in which

Lies the best guarantee for safeguarding the constitution.

    O noble people, hold together,

And take charge of your affairs without delay.

Why do I remind you, when those lands of yours are

A pasture for intellect and nurseries of the brave?

    You attained the constitution unstained

By blood, and unsullied by humiliation.

And you did the deeds of men, and were

On the day of pride like the nation of Japan.

So shelter in the crescent's shade, for it is

Abundant in kindness, boundless in beneficence.

It safeguards for Moses, the Messiah, and Ahmad

The right of allegiance and the sanctity of religions.

So take covenants and pledges by the guidance of the

Torah, the Gospel, and the Criterion.

And taste the meaning of life, for it is

In Egypt, words devoid of meanings.

    إِنَّ التَقاطُعَ آيَةُ الخِذلانِ

    And abandon estrangement between you over creeds;

Estrangement is a sign of failure.

And race toward lasting deeds, and reveal

To all the world the buried treasures of minds.

The age of aggressors has passed, as have vanished

The sheikhs' schemes and the rule of eunuchs.

Doubt does not dispel certainty, nor do dreams

Help the wrongdoer, nor the Devil's incantations.

The book was set down, and their throng was driven to

The day of reckoning and the station of submission.

And they recognized them in chains, one saying:

This is so-and-so, who informed against so-and-so.

And one grips his adversary by the collar, another demands redress

For blood spilled where the whales swim.

Their day has come here, and ahead of them,

After the resurrection, lies a second day there.

Glory to Him at whose command justice yielded

To the weak one's hand against the strong offender.

O day when the exiles returned to their land,

    Racing to behold their homelands!

God, how many fires you quenched that had blazed

For ages, and how many griefs you calmed!

This one flies to Faruq and those within it,

In longing, and that one to the hills of Lebanon.

They draped the bearer of good news in youth, and wore thin

With kisses the covenant of the Merciful's caliph.

And they embraced after separation like groves

In which the branches' embrace is lovely.

So you see women unveiled among the men,

Not guarding against the assaults of eyelids.

How wondrous they are, created as gracious maidens,

Coming forth in joy and in sorrow.

Welcome to the unveiled one, and to her at whose

Unveiling the two luminaries bow before her beauty.

She stepped gracefully, perfuming the eastern lands, when

Her breezes blew from the Balkans.

Would that she had passed through Egypt and shone

Upon Tehran on her happiest day!

Longing has worn them both down; it has whitened

Both their livers and split both their hearts.

Humankind knew her appointed time and awaited

    July as the thirsty wait.

A month in which hope was revived, and resurrected

Were nations, whose fear was changed to safety.

    يَشدو بِذِكرِ صَنيعِها الفَتَيانِ

    It bestowed a blessing upon the New World;

The young men sing in remembrance of its beneficent deed.

And it granted a favor to the civilized French,

For which anthems and songs are recited.

    تَمّوزٌ أَنتَ مُنى الأَسيرِ العاني

    July, you are the father of months in majesty;

July, you are the longing of the captive in bondage.

Why not give us a share, so that perhaps we

May run with the living in an arena?

Shall the hopeful return from you with what they hoped for,

While we return with that deprivation?

    فَمَتى الأَوانُ وَأَنتَ خَيرُ أَوانِ

    July, we have indeed a pressing need of you;

So when is the time, since you are the best of times?

From me a greeting to the Abode of Peace,

And to the caliph of the sons of Uthman,

And to the army's men, marching in its ranks

Or mounted, whether far away or near,

And to those who have embraced the good, except

That one who calls to rebellion

And to rebellious Hejaz, with no concern

But the pursuit of ringing yellow gold.

What ails the Sharif, who traces his lineage to

The best of creation among the sons of Adnan,

That he now sides with him and supports his waywardness

And his misguidance with the dregs of the Bedouins?

By God, even if you two conscripted the sands of the dune,

And encamped in the haunts of eagles,

And planted the land of Hejaz with spearheads,

And made a sea of fires flow,

And raised strongholds there for protection,

From the land of Najd to the Gulf of Oman,

He would overwhelm you both, strike you both, and scatter you both—

The razer of fortresses and sweeper of lands.

Come willingly, both of you; otherwise, come

    Unwillingly, without strength or authority.

And to you, O scion of the caliphs, a song of praise

Whose fugitive verses would elude even Hassan,

From a poet at whose verse intellects leap

As souls leap at the ringing of lutes.

He offers praise to the monarch as ingots

Before which ingots of pure gold bow.

Indeed, when kings stand equal, I clothe them

Through praise, with crowns upon their crowns.
