    The people pray to God, Zaghlul,

    That the Nile may gain independence through your hands.

    Indeed, the man whom the evildoer crept in to kill

    Was being guarded for us by Gabriel.

    Must Saad die before we find life through him?

    A grave calamity for the sons of Egypt!

    Saad, you are indeed the greatest resource

    Stored for us, with which we strike and charge.

    فَاِنفُذ وَأَقصِد فَالنِبالُ قَليلُ

    And indeed you are the keenest arrow we shoot;

    So pierce through and strike true, for arrows are few.

    سَنُريهِ كَيفَ يَصيدُهُ زَغلولُ

    The eagle hopes to hunt in our land;

    We shall show it how Zaghlul hunts it down.

    عَن قَصدِ وادي النيلِ لَيسَ يَحولُ

    Indeed, we hurled at them a resourceful champion,

    Who never swerves from the Nile Valley's cause;

    خَوضِ الشَدائِدِ وَالخُطوبُ مُثولُ

    The fiercest of us in battle, the boldest in

    Braving hardships while calamities loom;

    A man of whole, undivided heart,

    Who does not sway even if the pyramids lean.

    إِنَّ العَدُوَّ سِلاحَهُ مَفلولُ

    Negotiate, and do not lower your wing in humiliation;

    Indeed, the enemy's weapon is blunted.

    لِمَقامِكَ الإِعظامُ وَالتَبجيلُ

    Negotiate while seated upon the Milky Way;

    Reverence and veneration attend your station.

    Negotiate; behind you stands a nation that has sworn

    Not to sleep while an intruder remains in the land.

    لا الجَيشُ يُفزِعُها وَلا الأُسطولُ

    Unarmed, yet lions in the struggle;

    Neither the army nor the fleet frightens her.

    Our fleet is unvarnished truth, and our army is the

    Eloquent arguments; our warfare is reasoned proof.

    War kindled by spears and sharp swords is not

    Like war kindled by reason and minds.

    وَاللَهُ بِالنَصرِ المُبينِ كَفيلُ

    Wage it there, armored in certainty;

    And God guarantees manifest victory.

    Is their leader bristling with weapons, clad in armor,

    While our leader has a handkerchief in his palm?

    And thus the handkerchief strikes a mightier blow

    Than a keen sword whose edge is deception.

    Yours is a stand in the East that glory knows,

    Surrounded by cries of 'God is greatest' and 'There is no god but God.'

    With it, shake every arrogant man in the West,

    So he may see and know what the thicket holds.

    Do not approach the Thames; beware of drinking from it,

    However honey-sweet it may seem to you.

    Scheming is mixed into its clearest water,

    And guile is dissolved within it, polished smooth.

    How many a seeker of its water, Saad, before you

    Has returned from it with burning thirst in his heart!

    These people have grasped the reins of their age,

    And within it they have their dramas and their acts.

    And they have snares which, when they cast them,

    Ensnare minds; their captive loses his wits.

    So beware their politics, and maintain a watchfulness

    Worthy of Saad; politics is a ghoul.

    If they put on a play, leave fantasy aside, for only

    Before truth does playacting fall.

    A handspan, by politics' reckoning, is a parasang,

    And a day in the orbit of politics is a generation.

    And for every word in the dictionaries they have

    A meaning said to be reasonable.

    وَلِكُلِّ كاذِبَةِ الخِضابِ نُصولُ

    Their politics has faded, and its dye has changed;

    And every falsely dyed thing must shed its color.

    They gathered the drugs of cunning and compounded

    What they compounded; you can analyze it.

    Saad, you are our leader and our representative,

    And upon you our king relies.

    يا سَعدُ أَنتَ أَمامَها مَسئولُ

    So defend and fight for a nation's demands;

    Saad, to that nation you are answerable.

    ما إِن لَهُ عَن أَرضِها تَحويلُ

    The Nile's source is ours, and so is its mouth;

    There is no diverting it away from her land.

    She trusted you with a trust that left no

    Path within it for doubt or misgivings.

    أَو بَعدَ ذاكَ عَلى الوَلاءِ دَليلُ

    She made your place in hearts one of love;

    Is there, after that, any further proof of loyalty?

    She nearly went mad when you were wounded, and her

    Noble patience in bearing calamities deserted her.

    Not one speaker in the nation failed to pray

    To his Lord for you, and his prayer is accepted.

    Saad, the feast almost became a day of mourning,

    With tears flowing there in sorrow for you.

    Were it not for God's protection, hopes would have folded away

    At your passing, and all hope would have ended.

    May the shooter's fingers be paralyzed! For his hand,

    The slash of knives; for your hand, kisses.

    This, your medal upon your chest, has no

    Equal among the medals of glory.

    You adorned it with pure, unsullied blood,

    For love of Egypt, blood once guarded is freely given.

    In every age, evildoers bear a crime

    That does not vanish with the passing of time.

    فينا وَزَكّى رَأيَهُ التَنزيلُ

    They wronged al-Faruq, the most just of those who judged

    Among us, and revelation vindicated his judgment;

    And Ali, the purest among us in mouth

    And hand, and our Prophet's unsheathed sword.

    Stand, orator of the East; renew our covenant

    Before departure, to leave no room for interpretation.

    Negotiate; if you sense evil, then resolve

    And break off, for your cord is joined to guidance.

    And return to us clothed in dignity,

    And upon you a wreath of its blossoms.

    We shall work for liberation and never falter,

    And God judges between us and turns fortunes.

    How many a state morning witnessed in its majesty,

    And night came upon it reduced to shattered remnants!

    And how many a people's palaces shone in the darkness,

    Only for the sun to rise upon them as ruins!

    O noble rising generation, a greeting

    Like a garden over which an east wind has swept.

    O blossoms of Egypt, her adornment and her defenders,

    After praising the leader, my praise of you is superfluous.

    You gave her your lives in youth's rose-bloom,

    And no withering had yet been seen upon the rose.

    How many a prisoner in her defense, and how many a fighter

    Whose blood lies unavenged upon her open squares!

    Follow the leader's path, and fulfill

    The country's hope, for hopes are placed in you all.

    فَاِستَقبِلوهُ وَحَجِّلوهُ وَطولوا

    You are the men of tomorrow, and tomorrow has drawn near;

    So welcome it, adorn it, and stand tall.
