لَقَدindeed نَصَلَhas faded الدُجىthe darkness فَمَتىso when تَنامُwill you sleep
أَهَمٌّis it worry ذادَdrove away نَومَكَyour sleep أَمor هُيامُlovesickness
The darkness has faded; when will you sleep?
Night's gloom has fallen, so when will you sleep?
Is it worry that drove away your sleep, or lovesickness?
Does wakefulness deny you rest or sorrow keep?
غَفاdozed المَحزونُthe sorrowful one وَالشاكيand the complaining one وَأَغفىand fell asleep
أَخوa sufferer of البَلوىaffliction وَنامَand slept المُستَهامُthe love-stricken one
The sorrowful and the complaining have dozed, and so has
The grieving and complaining are now both asleep,
The afflicted; the love-stricken has slept.
As is he who bears adversity, while you still weep,
وَأَنتَand you تُقَلِّبُyou turn الكَفَّينِboth hands آناًat one moment
وَآوِنَةًand at other times يُقَلِّبُكَtosses you about السَقامُillness
Yet you wring both hands at one moment,
Turning your palms this way and that, sickness steals your sleep,
And at other times, sickness tosses you about.
Tears streamed down your cheeks till clouds learned from your eyes to weep,
تَحَدَّرَتِstreamed down المَدامِعُthe tears مِنكَfrom you حَتّىuntil
تَعَلَّمَlearned مِنfrom مَحاجِرِكَyour eye sockets الغَمامُthe clouds
Your tears have streamed down until
Your tossing and turning startled the darkness awake
The clouds learned from your eyes.
You argue with fate while the world succumbs to slumber's embrace
وَضَجَّتand cried out مِنbecause of تَقَلُّبِكَyour tossing الحَشاياthe mattresses
وَأَشفَقَand felt pity مِنat تَلَهُّفِكَyour anguished yearning الظَلامُthe darkness
The mattresses cried out at your tossing,
You hid your love from us until silence itself gave voice to your case
And the darkness pitied your anguished yearning.
By your Lord, has passion returned, or the past been displaced?
تَبيتُyou spend the night تُساجِلُyou vie with الأَفلاكَthe celestial spheres سُهداًin sleeplessness
وَعَينُand the eye of الكَونِthe universe رَنَّقَهاblurred it المَنامُsleep
You spend the night vying with the heavens in wakefulness,
Gray hairs shine like swords fixed to your cheeks by time's embrace
While sleep has dimmed the universe's eye.
Does it befit an author, jewel of Egypt, to cry like a babe weaned from its place?
وَتَكتُمُناand you conceal from us حَديثَthe story of هَواكَyour love حَتّىuntil
You conceal from us the story of your love, until
Passion distracts you from Egypt’s plight, while in the tyrant’s grip it is debased
Silence reveals what speech concealed.
If my heart holds any love but Egypt, let me from love's circle be erased
بِرَبِّكَby your Lord هَلwhether رَجَعتَyou returned إِلىto رَسيسٍa lingering trace

By your Lord, have you returned to a lingering trace
I recall her glory when mighty Pharaohs ruled that virtuous place
Of memory, and has passion returned?
When men were men, and time itself was her devoted race
وَقَدand indeed لَمَعَgleamed المَشيبُgray hair وَذاكَand that سَيفٌa sword

عَلىupon فَودَيكَyour two temples عَلَّقَهُhung it الحِمامُdeath
And gray hair has flashed—and that is a sword
What happens there disturbs me, while Egypt therein lies disgraced
That death has hung upon your temples.
I see a people brought low by a crippling disease no cure can chase
أَيَجمُلُdoes it befit بِالأَديبِthe man of letters أَديبِthe man of letters of مِصرٍEgypt

Does it befit the man of letters, Egypt's man of letters,
When one year of woe passes, another appears in its place
To weep like a child distressed by weaning?
The plague of resignation has spread till livelihood is displaced
وَيَصرِفُهُand distracts him الهَوىlove عَنfrom ذِكرِremembering مِصرٍEgypt

وَمِصرٌand Egypt فيin يَدِthe hand of الباغيthe oppressor تُضامُis oppressed
And should love distract him from remembering Egypt,
It defies our wise men, as leprosy defies a cure or treatment space
While Egypt is oppressed in the tyrant's grasp?
Just as a man’s death stems from his hesitation, a people's death stems from disgrace
عَدِمتُmay I lose يَراعَتيmy reed pen إِنif كانَis ماwhat بيin me

هَوىًlove بَينَbetween الضُلوعِthe ribs لَهُit has ضِرامُa blaze
May I lose my pen if what afflicts me
We have grown weak and divided, with no efforts made to unite this place
Is love with a fire burning between my ribs.
Our plight in Egypt has worsened, as others thrive and our station is debased
وَماand what أَناI وَالغَرامَand passion وَشابَand turned gray رَأسيmy head

What have I to do with passion, when my head has grayed,
No wonder our own ways have conquered us, while most of us slumber in night’s embrace
And grievous calamity has ravaged my youth?
Awaken, Hussein, men who pursue truth and justice but now rest in night’s embrace
وَرَبّانيand schooled me الَّذيthat which رَبّىschooled لَبيداًLabid

فَعَلَّمَنيso taught me الَّذيwhat جَهِلَdid not know الأَنامُhumankind
And that which schooled Labid has schooled me,
Help your brother’s son as your father helped you, for in your hands salvation has its place
Then taught me what humankind did not know.
Bring concord to the council hall, for discord has destroyed this oasis space
لَعَمرُكَby your life ماnot أَرِقتُI lay awake لِغَيرِfor other than مِصرٍEgypt
وَماand not ليfor me دونَهاapart from her أَمَلٌa hope يُرامُto be pursued
By your life, I have lain awake for none but Egypt,
Teach them to confront adversity, for one like you will not be daunted in combat’s face
And apart from her I have no hope to pursue.
The Party of the Right, though few, are honorable men fixed in your embrace
ذَكَرتُI remembered جَلالَهاher majesty أَيّامَthe days when كانَتshe was
تَصولُwielded might بِهاthrough her الفَراعِنَةُthe Pharaohs العِظامُthe mighty
I recalled her majesty in the days when
The Party of the Left has lions, unbroken, though now they suffer loss and night’s embrace
The mighty Pharaohs wielded power through her.
Be for this land, seize every chance, let no setback your resolve displace
وَأَيّامَand the days when الرِجالُthe men بِهاin her رِجالٌmen
وَأَيّامَand the days when الزَمانُTime لَهاto her غُلامُa servant
And the days when her men were truly men,
They never ruled us by miracles, but by divisions they found space
And the days when Time was her servant.
Trust not their promises, their statesmen are clouds that bring no rain to this place
فَأَقلَقَso disturbed مَضجَعيmy resting place ماwhat باتَspent the night فيهاin her

وَباتَتand spent the night مِصرُEgypt فيهِin it فَهَلso whether أُلامُam I blamed
So what has lodged within her has disturbed my rest,
But fear them when they are kind, for I see their politicians have no guiding trace
And what Egypt herself is lodged in—am I to blame?
How often the Consul laughed at our speeches, disarming us with a smile on his face
أَرىI see شَعباًa people بِمَدرَجَةِin the path of العَواديcalamities

I see a people in the path of calamities,
Abul-Falah, affairs are chaos, and ignorance paired with chaos is our disgrace
Whose bones an incurable disease has drained of marrow.
So enlighten us by spreading knowledge, and know any lack seeks its own erase
إِذاwhenever ماemphatic particle مَرَّpassed بِالبَأساءِwith hardship عامٌa year

Whenever a year of hardship passes,
Knowledge alone cannot avail us if determination does not knowledge embrace
Another year of hardship looms over them.
Without a constitution Egypt will not endure, for that is its one saving grace
سَرىspread داءُthe disease of التَواكُلِidle dependence فيهِin them حَتّىuntil

The disease of idle dependence has spread through them, until
They prohibited our drinking the Nile’s water pure, claiming it our life erases,
That throng snatched away their livelihood.
But death is not in pure water, rather in the companies that profit from legal disgrace
قَدِindeed اِستَعصىproved intractable عَلىto الحُكَماءِthe wise مِنّاamong us

كَماjust as اِستَعصىproved intractable عَلىto الطِبِّmedicine الجُذامُleprosy
It has defied the wise among us,
Exploiting our ignorance, they plundered our wealth, with the tramways first in their race
As leprosy has defied medicine.
Woe to the canal if the British take it, as the veil falls from colonialism’s face
هَلاكُthe ruin of الفَردِthe individual مَنشَؤُهُits source تَوانٍnegligence

وَمَوتُand the death of الشَعبِthe people مَنشَؤُهُits source اِنقِسامُdivision
An individual's ruin springs from negligence,
Only remnants are left us in this world, glorifying ruins in place of our race
And a people's death springs from division.
We who made it a bridle find the bridle broken if from our hands it slips in its race
وَإِنّاand we قَدindeed وَنيناwe grew slack وَاِنقَسَمناand we became divided

فَلاso no سَعيٌeffort هُناكَthere وَلاand no وِئامُharmony
And we have indeed grown slack and divided,
Oh palace of governance, I know not what your bag contains, war or a peace to displace?
So there is neither effort nor harmony.
Tell us, do you plan progress or further regression for our displaced race?
فَساءَso became wretched مُقامُناour residence فيin أَرضِthe land of مِصرٍEgypt
وَطابَand became pleasant لِغَيرِناfor others besides us فيهاin her المَقامُresidence
Thus our dwelling in the land of Egypt has turned bitter,
And O Party of the Right, we cry to you, your arrows and spears no longer find their place
While dwelling there has grown pleasant for others.
And O Party of the Left, upon you from us and from the sons of your Najd be safety and grace

So it is no wonder if others gain control over
Our paths, while most of us sleep.

Husayn, Husayn, you are equal to this task; awaken
Men who have slept instead of seeking justice.

And, by your father, be a support to your brother's son,
For you are a fine blade in his hand.

Pour harmony into the council chamber,
For discord has ruined both us and it.

And teach them to confront calamities,
For one like you is not daunted by the clash.

For in the party of the Right you have men,
And though they are few, they are noble.

And in the party of the Left you have lions,
Brave warriors who have no taste for defeat.

So stand for the country, and do not fail
To seize favorable moments and opportunities.

They did not gain mastery over us by a miracle,
But there is unity in their ranks.

So never trust those people's promise,
For their politicians' clouds hold no rain.

And fear them when they turn gentle, for I
See that politicians honor no pledge.

How often the chief has laughed at our beards,
And a smile of his has deceived our leading men.

Abu al-Fallah, affairs are in chaos,
And the people's ignorance and chaos are inseparable.

So bring us happiness by spreading knowledge, and know
That imperfection is followed by perfection.

Knowledge alone cannot sustain us,
Unless resolve lends knowledge its support.

Her life will never have a firm foundation.

And said it was a swift death.

Yet that swift death, if we use our reason,
Is nothing but the companies, for which the forbidden has become lawful.

They have indeed prospered through our heedlessness, and departed
With our wealth, the tramway foremost among them.

The sons of the Thames, and the veil falls away!

In our hands, and even scraps have grown scarce.
