Tell the Naqib: we did visit His Eminence,

But guards and chamberlains turned us away from him.

Your door once stood open to whoever sought it,

And today the door is barred against the seeker.

Why did you not recall our companionship at Dar al-Kutub,

For we are friends, despite the vicissitudes of time?

Had I come to the Pope, he would have honored me,

And the Báb would have honored me, had I come to him.

    إِنّي شَريفٌ وَلِلأَشرافِ أَحسابُ

    Do not fear that I have come seeking a reward;

I am noble, and the noble have ancestral honor.

So rejoice in the distinction you have gained, even if severed

Are the bonds between me and you after today.
