Shine forth—may the horizons of dawn ransom you!

And lift your veil from a radiant day.

Blessed are you, O day of deliverance; may good fortunes never fail

    You, at morning or evening.

By God, bring us good fortune and glad tidings

In bringing an exile home and securing release.

You came, with the days arrayed around you

In two ranks, as you stride with a swaggerer's gait.

    في كُلِّ لَحظٍ مِنكَ أَلفُ صَباحِ

    And you emerged from the veils of the unseen, white-marked;

In every glance of yours, a thousand dawns.

If transmigration truly existed in this world,

    I would see in you the transmigration of souls;

And you would be the very day of the Labyrinth,

    In might, majesty, and generosity.

A day whose majesty and beauty show you

In its loveliness, the power of the One who cleaves the dawn.

The sun bestowed upon it a robe of gold,

And March gifted it the most delicate sash.

God inscribed it for us upon His Tablet

For all eternity, so none can erase it.

Greet it for us, O blossoms, and fill

Its reaches with your far-wafting fragrance.

And gift it for us, O spring, with all

The laurel and chrysanthemum blossoms you have brought forth.

Take pride, O Fuad, for around your throne stands a nation

That has pledged itself, little fingers clasped, to reform.

Our sons, who are legends of generosity,

Are not miserly toward their homelands.

They endured the bitterness of calamities and attained

The sweetness of their wishes, honeyed in the cups.

A man armed with patience is not defenseless,

Though a wielder of spearheads and swords assails him.

Patience, if you reflect, is the greatest resource,

And truth, if only they knew, the finest weapon.

They have denied the weak man's right; but has

Denial of that right ever appeared in a chapter of Scripture?

How often have Egypt's nerves been numbed by the fragrant wafts

Of their promises, like the fragrance of apples.

The Egyptian took happy comfort in them:

Have you seen a child they placate with a treat?

    They perfected their promise-breaking until

Their words were scattered without winds.

When a sleeper awakened in Kinana,

And one awake cried out in painful complaint,

And those dark shrouds were lifted and rolled away,

And the suns of truth appeared, shining bright,

They learned, praise be to God, that our abiding

Beneath any shade but God's is impossible.

    حَرَمُ الكِنانَةِ لَم يَكُن بِمُباحِ

    So today, rest at ease, O Kinana, and be still;

Kinana's sanctuary was never open to trespass.

Who would raid the lions in their forest,

Or swim where the crocodile swims?

The Nile has glory firmly rooted through the ages,

Since the age of Amun and the age of Ptah.

Ask the ages about it, and ask its monuments

In Egypt how many travelers they have witnessed.

O undisputed lord of the two lands,

No court in loftiness compares with yours.

Never has light above light appeared to the eye

Like the crown above your radiant brow.

Through your throne, when you assumed it, Egypt recalled

The throne of al-Mu'izz in her, and the throne of Salah.

In every land, your majesty inspires awe,

And every land finds the shade of your wing.

Yours are Egypt, Sudan, and the river that

Struts between hills and broad lowlands.

And Sudan's towering trees bear witness that they

Were planted in the reign of your conquering forefathers.

No wonder if a loud singer sings your praises,

Or a gentle singer, in the arena of panegyrists.

The beauty of song sung loudly is as its beauty,

To a connoisseur, when sung gently.

Was not Egypt's kingdom yours, with its Nile

    Flowing between its spacious meadows,

Its gardens lush, its hills adorned,

Its spreading trees and breezes laden with dew?

Amr uttered about its soil a wondrous saying,

Handed down and engraved upon tablets:

At one moment you see it as pearls, as though

    Lovely necklaces were scattered across its soil;

Then behold, it is emerald to the beholder,

    Its greenness healing you of sorrows;

Then behold, it is musk, whose blackness is cleft

Like leather by the farmer's ploughs.

    لَم يَبقَ مِن سَبَبٍ سِوى المِفتاحِ

    Everything is ready for Parliament;

Nothing remains to provide but the key.

It lies in your hands, a trust held for subjects

Who praise you with eloquent tongues.

Return the trust, O Fuad, for

Restoring a trust is the generous man's nature.

And raise your people, O Fuad, to the heights,

And to a spacious place in this world.

For God and all creation bear witness that we

Are forthright seekers of a right in life.

Here stands Parliament's beacon before you,

To guide the way like a sailor's compass needle.

So head toward it sincerely, for you have

No happiness or success apart from it.

The deciding voice belongs to consultation, which is what

Checks desire and curbs every wild impulse.

It never loses its way, as though

The road were made for it without turnings.

It ceaselessly repels your enemy's plots

And blunts the edge of the invading usurper.

So rally around consultation, keeping your independence

In judgment, guided by no prompter's impulse.

God's hand is with the united community, so strike

With the community's staff, and win success.

Be men of action, and give the lie

To the lamp-bearer when the morning is bright.

Renounce mutual abandonment in your affairs, for

The specter of mutual abandonment is the most dreadful of specters.

By God, misery reached its utmost with us

Only through discord and quarrels among us.

Rise, O son of Egypt—you are free—and reclaim

Your forefathers' glory; do not return to merrymaking.

Roll up your sleeves and struggle in life, for this

World of yours is a realm of deadly conflict and struggle.

Drink with the drinkers from the sweet rain,

And when it ceases, draw water with the water-drawers.

    وَاِضرِب عَلى الإِلحاحِ بِالإِلحاحِ

    If a calamity persists against you, do not weaken;

And strike at persistence with persistence.

    خَوضُ البِحارِ رِياضَةُ السَبّاحِ

    Plunge into life, though its waves clash;

Braving the seas is the swimmer's training.

    لا تَحسَبَنَّ الغَمرَ كَالضَحضاحِ

    Make your own sight a scout before your steps;

Never mistake deep water for the shallows.

If a settlement rejects you and turns hostile

Toward you, pass it by and depart with the departing.

    في البَرِّ لا يَلويكَ غابُ رِماحِ

    At sea, let no warship's fire turn you back;

On land, let no forest of spears divert you.

Look at the Westerner: how he has been elevated

Among the peoples by the tireless worker's nature.

By God, the sons of the West attained their wishes

Only through sound intentions in their midst.

They rode the seas even when their waters froze,

And the skies amid the winds' wailing,

And land, its pebbles molten, blazing,

Hurling a scorching heat that strips the skin.

Their young man meets the times with a resolve

Astonishing, and a face unflinching in calamity.

    وَعرُ الطَريقِ لَدَيهِ كَالصَحصاحِ

    Venturing boldly, he cuts through the heart of the deserts;

The rugged road is to him as a level plain.

Yet Kinana's son lies stagnant in Kinana,

Gazing with an eye devoid of ambition.

He does not employ his intelligence, as you know,

Though his intelligence is like a darting flash.

He has become like river water, its sweetness lost

In the sea amid its spreading brine.

So rise, cease complaining of the times, and do not wail

In crushing misery with the mourners.

    إِنَّ الذَكاءَ حُبالَةُ الأَرباحِ

    And earn honor for Egypt through your capital;

Intelligence is the snare for profits.

If you are granted leadership, weave for it

Two cloaks, of firmness and of gentleness.

    فَلَكَم وَرَدتَ الماءَ غَيرَ قَراحِ

    And drink pure water in comfort;

For how often you have come to water that was not pure!
