عُفاةَ الناسِ أَم هِمَمَ الكِرامِ

Shall I console your family for your loss, or console

Shall I console your family, or shall I

the seekers of bounty among the people, or the aspirations of the noble?

Console the virtuous among people, or souls of the generous?

وَما أَدري أَرُكنُ الجاهِ أَودى

وَما أَدري أَرُكنُ الجاهِ أَودى

وَقَد أَودَيتَ أَم رُكنُ الشَآمِ

وَقَد أَودَيتَ أَم رُكنُ الشَآمِ

And I do not know: is it the pillar of prestige that has perished,

I do not know if power provides more shelter,

now that you have perished, or the pillar of the Levant?

When you have provided shelter, or if Damascus is a pillar.
