O grave, this guest of yours is the hope of a nation.
O grave, this guest is a nation's hopes.
Proclaim God’s greatness and oneness, and, kneeling, clasp your guest’s hand.
So proclaim God's greatness and oneness, and kneel to greet your guest.
عَزيزٌhard to bear عَلَيناfor us أَنto نَرىsee فيكَwithin you مُصطَفىMustafa
شَهيدَa martyr for العُلاglory فيin زَهرَةِthe bloom of العُمرِlife ذاوِياwithering
It pains us dearly to see Mustafa within you,
It is painful for us to see Mustafa within you,
a martyr to glory, withering in life’s first bloom.
A martyr for glory, withering in the bloom of life.
أَياO قَبرُgrave لَوif أَنّاthat we فَقَدناهُwe had lost him وَحدَهُhim alone
لَكانَwould have been التَأَسّيconsolation مِنfrom جَوىthe burning pain of الحُزنِgrief شافِياhealing
O grave, if he alone were all that we had lost,
O grave, had we lost only him,
consolation might have healed the heart’s searing grief.
Consolation would have healed the burning ache of grief.
وَلَكِنand yet فَقَدناwe lost كُلَّevery شَيءٍthing بِفَقدِهِthrough losing him
وَهَيهاتَand beyond hope أَنthat يَأتيshould come بِهِwith him الدَهرُtime ثانِياa second time
But in losing him, we lost everything;
But in losing him, we have lost everything,
how far-fetched that Time should ever bring his like again.
And time can never bring him back again.
فَياso O سائِليyou who ask me أَينَwhere المُروءَةُchivalry وَالوَفاand fidelity
وَأَينَand where الحِجاwisdom وَالرَأيُand judgment وَيحَكَalas for you هاهِياhere it is
O you who ask me, “Where are valor and fidelity?
So, you who ask me where chivalry and fidelity are,
And where are intellect, sound counsel, and governing judgment?”—There they lie.
And where wisdom and judgment are—alas for you, here they are!
هَنيئاًgood fortune لَهُمto them فَليَأمَنواso let them feel safe كُلَّevery صائِحٍone who cries out
فَقَدfor indeed أُسكِتَhas been silenced الصَوتُthe voice الَّذيthat كانَwas عالِياloud
Good fortune to them; let them feel safe from every voice that cries aloud,
Congratulations to them! Let them fear no one who cries out,
for the voice that once rang high has now been silenced.
For the voice that once rose high has been silenced.
وَماتَand died الَّذيhe who أَحياrevived الشُعورَfeeling وَساقَهُand led it
إِلىtoward المَجدِglory فَاِستَحياso brought back to life النُفوسَthe souls البَوالِياworn-out
Dead is the man who awakened feeling and led it
And he who revived feeling and led it has died,
toward glory, reviving souls worn away by decay.
To glory, bringing worn-out souls back to life.
مَدَحتُكَI praised you لَمّاwhen كُنتَyou were حَيّاًalive فَلَمbut did not أَجِدexcel

I praised you while you lived, never supposing
I praised you while you lived, but failed to excel;
that today I would excel in elegies for you.
Yet today I excel in elegies for you.
عَلَيكَover you وَإِلّاand otherwise ماwhy لِذاwith this الحُزنِgrief شامِلاًall-encompassing

It is for you—else why is grief all-embracing?
For you—why else would this grief be all-encompassing?
And over you—else why are these people weeping?
And for you—why else would these people be weeping?

The healer of souls dies, yet finds no
The healer of souls dies, and finds no one
healer for the sickness within those souls.
To heal the sickness of souls within him.
وَكُنّاand we were نِياماًasleep حينَماwhen كُنتَyou were ساهِداًawake
فَأَسهَدتَناso you made us sleepless حُزناًwith grief وَأَمسَيتَand you became غافِياasleep
We slept while you remained wakeful;
And we were asleep while you kept vigil,
now grief keeps us awake while you have fallen asleep.
So you have made us sleepless with grief, and now lie asleep.

Martyr to glory, may your voice remain among us,
O martyr for glory, may your voice remain among us,
ringing as it did yesterday, deep and resonant.
Ringing as it resounded yesterday.

It calls to us: 'This is a building I raised;
by God, do not demolish what I built.”
So, for God's sake, do not tear down what I built.'

It cries to us: 'Do not let people feel that I
have died and left the living nation desolate.”
Have died and that the quarter now lies empty.'

It adjures us by God not to divide,
It implores us by God: 'Do not divide,
but to be men and give our enemies no joy.
And be men; do not gladden the enemies.

For my spirit looks out from this resting place,
watching over you in my stead, though I am far away.
Watching over you for me, though I lie decaying.

Fear calamities for you in discord.'

Yes, caller to goodness, we
Yes, O you who call to goodness, we
remain faithful to the covenant while we live; sleep in peace.
Keep our pledge as long as we live; so sleep in peace.

Your edifice is guarded, and your image remains present;
Your building is preserved, and your apparition stands before us;
your voice is heard although you are far away.
And your voice is heard, though you are far away.

We knew you never wept, and disapproved of seeing
a man of valor weeping in some circumstances.
A man of valor weeping in certain circumstances.

So permit us to weep today, and tomorrow
you will see us as you wish: mountains firmly rooted.
You will see us as you wish: mountains standing firm.

O Nile, if after his death you do not flow
blood-red, then cease to flow, O Nile.
With red blood, may you never flow, O Nile!

And O Egypt, if you do not preserve the memory of his time
until the Resurrection, may your dissolution never end.
Until the Final Gathering, may your dissolution endure forever!

O people of Egypt, if you do not comprehend your loss,
And O people of Egypt, if you fail to grasp your loss,
know that fortune’s star has sunk and fallen.
Be sure that the star of good fortune has fallen out of sight.

one man alone, but an army on campaign.
A lone young man; rather, you were an army on campaign.
