My paths have been wrested from my control,

and sound poetic instinct has rebelled against me.

And the two companions have deserted my pen:

    no prose, and no verse.

I suffer and conceal my misery,

and God knows both me and it.

    The hide is worm-eaten—what can

I hope for, now that the hide is worm-eaten?

Egypt does not do me justice, nor

do I turn from my love for her.

And if a wretched man departs

from her abode, I am the one who stays.

There I befriended you and chose

    you, O dear, intimate friend.

I am the one you knew, the one you tested,

and the one whose affection endures.

    God bless that neighborly companionship,

    and that sweet, gentle life,

    on the western side, overlooking

the Nile, when all the world was bliss.

In days when joy knew us

    there, and cares knew us not;

in days when we frolicked with gazelles

    and roamed, enraptured, through their pastures;

you gave no ear to the reprover,

nor did I care who found fault.

    God bless our gatherings,

    adorned by noble character.

    No lout frequented them, nor

did a scoundrel lodge in their courtyard.

    Revelry walked through their

precincts, watched over by sober minds.

    Mirth as youth desired,

and wisdom as the sage desired.

And wine was carried round by

a courteous server, while a gazelle went round.

    Over its cups flowed

a convivial warmth that made the sober man lighthearted.

It never complained of us, nor

did the drinking companion complain of its aftereffects.

And the Nile was a mirror; there breathed

    upon its surface the breeze.

It robbed the sky of its stars,

and they fell to float in its depths.

A gauzy veil was spread over it,

    white, woven by the clouds.

It was transparent to our eyes, except

for the part of it the surface had tinged.

And it was as though we were above the sky,

    with that haze beneath us.

    ري لا نُضامُ وَلا نَضيمُ

    Events ran their course as they would;

we were not wronged, nor did we wrong.

Neither dawn disturbed us with the news

of the times, nor the dark of night.

Ah, would that I knew how

you are, and how you fare, O leader!

As for me, I am still the same:

I wear out as a tattered garment wears out.

    No friend after you consoles

my soul, nor any tender heart.

Time has plotted against us—and no

    wonder if an adversary plots.

Now bitter cold has enclosed you,

    while hellfire keeps melting me.

So your drink is cold water,

    while mine is scalding water.

And you wish that Dhuka would rise

    upon you on a day that stands still;

and I wish that Dhuka were blotted out,

and a pitch-black night would engulf her.

So my affliction is agonizing heat,

and your ordeal is agonizing cold.

So it is as though I were the Pharaoh of

Egypt, and you an accursed devil.

Then send me, on a breath of wind,

    hail that rumbling thunder urges along;

I will send you a blast,

searing hot, with the scorching wind coursing through it.

    As for our greeting to

you, the written message will explain it.
