May God not preserve their covenant—those fortunes!

How have you come to be, O son of Abd al-Majid?

You who sated the whale with the flesh of humankind,

And starved the soldiers beneath the banners.

Yesterday I wept because of you; why, then,

Have I spent the night weeping for you, Abd al-Hamid?

The Muslims rejoiced before the Christians,

At your plight, before the Druze, before the Jews.

They all gloated; yet it is no mark of nobility

For humankind to gloat over an outcast.

You are Abd al-Hamid with the crown bound on,

And Abd al-Hamid, held in chains.

Immortal you are, in defiance of the nights,

Among great men, those worthy of immortality.

You have in history—and perfection is impossible—

    Pages both white and black.

They tried to erase what you had done, and wished

They could erase the railway line.

That, Abd al-Hamid, is your treasure with God,

Enduring, even if lost among His servants.

Honor him, and heed God in your treatment of the old man,

And do not wear him down with threats.

Do not fear his harm; the old man is falling,

With no strength left to rise.

He ruled for a third of a century, his name invoked

By every Muslim in the world.

Whenever prayers began, the supplicant prayed

For Abd al-Hamid to be upheld.

For this captive’s name had once been coupled

With mention of the Messenger and the oneness of God.

I have come to fear for you, lest they say,

If you stir up the hidden stores of rancor:

    فَغَدا اليَومَ أَلفُ عَبدِ الحَميدِ

    “Yesterday Abd al-Hamid was one man;

Today he has become a thousand Abd al-Hamids.”

O captive on Saint Helena, welcome

    A new captive in Salonica.

Tell him how your dominion vanished; you were not protected

By the mustering of arms or men.

The soldiers did not protect you, though they ransomed you with lives

And wealth, O beloved of the soldiers.

Tell him how you once were, how you possessed the

Earth, how you alone were glorified.

And toppled thrones, throne after throne,

And stained one tract of land after another.

Whenever you reached a goal unreached

By time’s own ambition, you said, ‘Is there more?’

The earth grew too narrow for your reach, so you cast

A ready gaze toward the sky.

Tell him: exalted is He to whom dominion belongs; no dominion

Belongs to any but the Guardian, the Worshipped One.

However wretched you are, your lot is easier

Than that of the grief-stricken island captive.

And the captive of the cages was more wretched still,

Were you to ask the books about Bayezid.

Abd al-Hamid was more wretched in the palace

Than in captivity and grievous affliction.

He knew no repose at night,

No, nor did he savor the taste of slumber.

Ever wary, he dreaded the darkness and feared

The stir of the wind or an infant’s cry.

A tunnel beneath the earth’s surface, more hidden

In its deep darkness than an ingrate’s conscience,

Defies imagination’s attempt to feel out that

Door, the door of the ill-starred caliph.

Is what was said of you true, and is it true,

What we heard from the narrators who bore witness:

That Abd al-Hamid destroyed the sacred law

And outdid the deeds of al-Walid?

Whether innocent or guilty, you will be requited

On the day you are requited before an all-witnessing Lord.

Is it true you wept when the delegation arrived,

And the trembling of a coward seized you?

And forgot your forefathers, glory, and eminence,

And honor, O you of noble ancestry?

We have not known kings to weep; yet

Perhaps it was a surge of the steadfast heart.

Perhaps it was a farewell tear for that

Kingdom, or a memory of those times.

Your tears washed away the sin of your past

And shielded you from the evil of the day of threatened punishment.

    لَيسَ ذاكَ الشَفيعُ بِالمَردودِ

    Your tears interceded for you before humankind;

Such an intercessor is not rejected.

Your tears today, like your command yesterday,

Are obeyed by master and subject.

Abd al-Aziz was nobler in his conduct

Than you on the memorable day of his deposition.

He feared his own remembered words, and rose above

Humiliation, and died the death of lions.

He drew his scissors close to him and cried:

‘Severing the vein is better than life’s humiliation.’

Hail the reign of Rashad, O East, and attain

What you have wished for since long ago.

    كَ فَأَعظِم بِتاجِهِ المَعقودِ

    Muhammad the Fifth has assumed the kingship;

How splendid is the crown bound upon him!

And he shone at a festival where shone

The sword of Uthman as it was girded on.

Time stood in awe when it saw the two swords

In the grasp of the mighty, glorious one.

Bow your heads before majesty, O nations of the earth,

In prostration; this is the place for prostration.

God knows that the reign of Rashad

Is the best omen for the return of al-Rashid’s reign.
