حَسبُenough for القَوافيthe verses وَحَسبيand enough for me حينَwhen أُلقيهاI recite them
حَسبُ القَوافي وَحَسبي حينَ أُلقيها
أَنّيthat I إِلىto ساحَةِthe court of الفاروقِal-Faruq أُهديهاI offer them
أَنّي إِلى ساحَةِ الفاروقِ أُهديها
It is honor enough for these verses—and for me, when I recite them—
It is honor enough for these verses and for me, when I recite them,
that I offer them at the court of al-Faruq.
That I offer them to the court of al-Faruq.
لاهُمَّO God هَبgrant ليto me بَياناًeloquence أَستَعينُI seek help بِهِthrough it
لاهُمَّ هَب لي بَياناً أَستَعينُ بِهِ
عَلىin قَضاءِpaying حُقوقٍdues نامَhas fallen asleep قاضيهاtheir payer
عَلى قَضاءِ حُقوقٍ نامَ قاضيها
O God, grant me eloquence by which I may find aid
O God, grant me eloquence with which I may seek help
in discharging claims whose judge has fallen asleep.
In paying dues whose payer has fallen asleep.
قَدindeed نازَعَتنِيَhas urged me نَفسيmy soul أَنto أَوَفّيهاpay them in full
قَد نازَعَتنِيَ نَفسي أَن أَوَفّيها
وَلَيسَand it is not فيwithin طَوقِthe power of مِثليone like me أَنto يُوَفّيهاpay them in full
وَلَيسَ في طَوقِ مِثلي أَن يُوَفّيها
My soul has indeed urged me to fulfill them,
Indeed, my soul has urged me to pay them in full,
yet it is beyond the power of one like me to fulfill them.
Yet it is not within the power of one like me to pay them in full.
فَمُرso command سَرِيَّthe noblest of المَعانيmeanings أَنto يُواتِيَنيaid me
فَمُر سَرِيَّ المَعاني أَن يُواتِيَني
فيهاin them فَإِنّيfor I am ضَعيفُweak in الحالِcondition واهيهاfrail in it
فيها فَإِنّي ضَعيفُ الحالِ واهيها
Then bid the noblest of meanings come to my aid
So bid the noblest of meanings to aid me
in this—for my powers are weak, unequal to it.
In this, for my condition is weak and frail.
