Is this a battlefield, or a place of Judgment?

And a watering-place of death, or Kawthar?

And are these troops who obeyed the whims

of their masters, or livestock being slaughtered?

By God, how hard are the hearts of those

who took charge of kingship and kept it for themselves!

And their power in this world beguiled them,

so they ranged far across the earth and colonized it.

The white peoples have sworn by their crosses

    not to forsake death until they are granted victory;

and the yellow peoples have sworn by their idols

not to sheathe the sword until they prevail.

Then the earth rocked with its pegs,

    when white met yellow.

And a wine of blood intoxicated it,

with which the Mikado and the Tsar amuse themselves.

And on the day of battle it resembled its sister,

when the red twilight shone within it.

And it came to yearn for its flood,

that perhaps it might be cleansed of its defilement.

You have sated, O War, the wolves of the wilderness,

and the eagles and vultures have choked on their fill.

And the fish have been provisioned in their sea,

yet human greed is beyond measure.

If this bear will not turn back,

and that dragon cannot be overcome,

and the white peoples will not accept their defeat,

and the yellow peoples, after today, will not be broken,

then why has that war bared

its shin until the army perished?

The people's lifeblood flowed over the sword-edges,

so the plain and the rivers ran with it.

    And Mukden became a ruby

    that pearls and jewels envy:

a ruby whose value among them was reckoned

in lives as countless as raindrops.

Death's messenger found himself among them,

bewildered, not knowing what he was ordered to do.

Azrael, have you ever seen in times past—

you, that astute and supremely skilled one—

anything like that cannon in its fury,

when its dreadful voice rises high?

You see it: if it bears down upon a life,

neither armor nor helmet can turn it back.

Kuropatkin passed the evening in turmoil,

and Oyama spent the night watching him.

And the Russians remained upon a live coal,

and glory called to them: 'Take heed—endure!'

    And that fleet—what befell it,

that the greatest panic seized it?

Does it, whenever a swimmer appears before it

beneath the darkness, or a boat cleaves the water,

take it for Togo and send it

a greeting in which Togo is better versed?

A greeting from a passionate, yearning lover,

whose breaths heave with its heat.

Has the Tsar, then, learned in his palace

what war reveals and what it conceals?

How many a slain man has lain upon the dust,

    beset by talon and beak!

And how many a wounded man, stretching out his hand,

calls his brother while he cannot see!

And how many a drowned man has sunk into an abyss

where a mountain plunges and never reappears!

And how many a captive has spent the night in his captivity,

while his soul drips with grief!

If you see no good for yourselves in peace,

then time is shorter than your ambitions.

War grieves us, even though it has come

to call upon the men of the East to take pride.

A time came upon the Easterner when,

if the living were mentioned, he went unmentioned.

And an age passed over the East, while it did not

come to mind or enter a thought,

until the yellow peoples restored its days,

so the black and brown peoples won redress.

So may God's mercy rest upon a nation

    whose memorable deeds history recounts.
