Indeed, oppression among us was chaos; then came the refinement
of its rough edges, until it became organized oppression.
تَمُنُّyou flaunt your favors عَلَيناto us اليَومَtoday أَنthat أَخصَبَgrew fertile الثَرىthe soil
وَأَنand that أَصبَحَbecame المِصرِيُّthe Egyptian حُرّاًfree مُنَعَّماliving in comfort
Today you hold it over us that the soil has grown fertile,
and that the Egyptian has become free and well-off.
أَعِدrestore عَهدَthe era of إِسماعيلَIsmail جَلداًflogging وَسُخرَةًand forced labor
فَإِنّيfor I رَأَيتُI found المَنَّflaunting favors أَنكىmore wounding وَآلَماand more painful
Restore Ismail's era, with flogging and forced labor,
for I have found the flaunting of favors more wounding and painful.
عَمِلتُمyou worked عَلىfor عِزِّthe exaltation of الجَمادِlifeless things وَذُلِّناand our humiliation
فَأَغلَيتُمُso you made costly طيناًclay وَأَرخَصتُمُand you cheapened دَماblood
You worked to exalt lifeless things and humiliate us,
so you made clay costly and blood cheap.
إِذاif أَخصَبَتgrew fertile أَرضٌa land وَأَجدَبَand grew destitute أَهلُهاits people

If a land grows fertile while its people grow destitute,
then may it produce no plants, nor may the sky shower it with rain.
نَهَشُّwe delight إِلىin الدينارِthe dinar حَتّىuntil إِذاwhen مَشىwent
بِهِwith it رَبُّهُits owner لِلسوقِto the market أَلفاهُhe found it دِرهَماa dirham
We delight in the dinar—until it is taken
by its owner to market, where he finds it a dirham.
فَلاso do not تَحسَبواreckon فيin وَفرَةِan abundance of المالِwealth لَمdid not تُفِدyield
مَتاعاًcomfort وَلَمand did not تَعصِمprotect مِنَfrom الفَقرِpoverty مَغنَماa gain
So do not count an abundance of wealth that has yielded no
comfort and offered no protection from poverty as a gain.
فَإِنَّfor indeed كَثيرَmuch المالِwealth وَالخَفضُand ease وارِفٌabundant
قَليلٌlittle إِذاwhen حَلَّarrived الغَلاءُhigh prices وَخَيَّماand made camp
For wealth that is plentiful when ease abounds
is little when high prices descend and make camp.
