If you give money out of fear,

then we call on you to give willingly.

Their founder scattered countless elementary schools,

like ash scattered into the eye of a shrewd, discerning man.

So they founded a thousand elementary schools, though they knew

that lamps are no substitute for blazing stars.

Suppose the hired hand or the ploughman has attained

the ability to read newspapers and books:

who will heal when an illness strikes?

Who will defend honor and property?

And who will tame the Nile's waters if they run wild

and threaten Egypt with calamities and ruin?

And who will be entrusted with the scales of justice among you,

so that right is seen to wield power and prevail?

And who will look out upon the celestial spheres, observing them

across the zones, from far and near,

spending the night telling us what

the mysteries of the unseen disclose through translucent veils?

And who will wrest from the earth's skin what was embedded

within it by nature—marvels and wonders—

ever seeking in its particles some tidings

the earth withheld in ages past?

And who will lift the veil of ignorance if effaced

are the signposts of the right course amid doubt and misgivings?

So you have no bond of union, O peoples,

except through a university with unbroken ties.

Saad took charge of it for a time, then handed it over

to Amin, who neither shrank back nor feared.

So help him; he will help you in a work

in which lie glory and the ends you hope to gain.

And show the men of the West that you,

when you seek, attain the goal of your quest.

For greatness, turn to nothing but high resolves,

leaping high, heedless of calamities' resolve.

For placing your hopes in others is weakness

in the soul that slackens the reins of striving and perseverance.

If a caller rises from among us, their spokesman says:

“Make no clamor, for the people's ruin lies in clamor.”

Or if a mishap befalls us that we hope to remove,

he says, “Submit, and put aside the surge of anger.”

Thus never have we risen toward a height we seek

without descending into a depth of ruin.

O Egypt, after this despair, is there room

where hope may flow through every field of endeavor?

We are not dead, nor do the living resemble us,

as though within you we had neither been present nor absent.

We weep for a land where gold has flowed

to newcomers, while its own people go hungry.

When shall we see it, its treasuries transformed into

a treasure of knowledge, not a treasure of gold?

This is the worthy work, so contribute

with money; we have indeed contributed to it with literature.
