I turned away from passions, as a noble man turns away.

And I was fair, even against myself; a man of understanding is fair.

I kept company with guidance for twenty days and nights,

and my certainty grew firm after it had trembled.

So I went with a sharp sword of despair in my soul,

and returned with a scripture of forbearance in my breast.

And I was as the son of Imran was, a novice,

while he was like the one described in the chapter of the Cave.

My heart is like a needle that has been magnetized

by love of you: however turned away from you, it turns back.

It is as though my reed pen were prostrate in praise of you,

its tear ducts streaming in reverent fear of God.

It is as though you, with hopes circling around you,

were a clear spring, with birds fluttering at its sides.

And my reed pen and fingertips blossomed on my page,

and my words; so the page spent the night reaping and plucking.

And it gathered a bouquet from the blossoms of praise for you:

Spring's eye beholds it and is dazzled.

The breezes pass it as a gift at every predawn hour,

and walk across the face of the meadows, giving off fragrance.

O imam of guidance, I see the people have devised

innovations for themselves from which the sacred law turns away.

They saw their life in the graves of the dead,

so they went to those graves and circled them.

And they spent the night crouching over them, as though they were

devotees before an idol of the Age of Ignorance.

So shine upon those souls, that perhaps

they may soften when you shine within them, and grow gentle.

For you are to them as the sun is to the sea: it

turns bitter, salty water fresh, so that it may be sipped.

Lavish in kindness, ready to forgive, and just,

with many enemies, yet no rancor, ever helpful.

Each day he takes a stand in pursuit of God's pleasure,

and a stand in the arena of benevolence and righteousness.

Jamal al-Din was manifest in the radiance of his face,

and Ahnaf shone within the folds of his two cloaks.

I have seen you issue fatwas without offending reason,

as though you were Yusuf in giving fatwas and in knowledge.

So you are equal to it if an alarmmonger rises in the East,

and you are equal to it if an alarmmonger rises in the West.

You have reached such perfection that, were it to touch his unbelief,

his unbelief would become faith through which pure monotheism is professed.
