أَراكَ وَأَنتَ نَبتُ اليَومِ تَمشي

أَراكَ وَأَنتَ نَبتُ اليَومِ تَمشي

بِشِعرِكَ فَوقَ هامِ الأَوَّلينا

بِشِعرِكَ فَوقَ هامِ الأَوَّلينا

I see you, though you are today's shoot, walking

I see you today, a sapling walking

With your poetry above the heads of the ancients.

With your hair above the days of yore

وَأوتيتَ النُبُوَّةَ في المَعاني

وَأوتيتَ النُبُوَّةَ في المَعاني

وَما دانَيتَ حَدَّ الأَربَعينا

وَما دانَيتَ حَدَّ الأَربَعينا

And you have been granted prophethood in the realm of meanings,

You were granted prophecy in meanings

Though you have not neared the threshold of forty.

Yet not near forty years of age

فَزِن تاجَ الرِئاسَةِ بَعدَ سامي

فَزِن تاجَ الرِئاسَةِ بَعدَ سامي

كَما زانَت فَرائِدُهُ الجَبينا

كَما زانَت فَرائِدُهُ الجَبينا

So adorn the crown of leadership after Sami,

So adorn the crown of leadership after the sublime

As its jewels adorned the brow.

As its forelocks adorned the forehead

وَهَذا الصَولَجانُ فَكُن حَريصاً

وَهَذا الصَولَجانُ فَكُن حَريصاً

عَلى مُلكِ القَريضِ وَكُن أَمينا

عَلى مُلكِ القَريضِ وَكُن أَمينا

And here is the scepter; so be vigilant

This is the royal mace so be watchful

Over the kingdom of verse, and be trustworthy.

Of the realm of poetry and be trustworthy

فَحَسبُكَ أَنَّ مُطرِيَكَ اِبنُ هاني

فَحَسبُكَ أَنَّ مُطرِيَكَ اِبنُ هاني

وَأَنَّكَ قَد غَدَوتَ لَهُ قَرينا

وَأَنَّكَ قَد غَدَوتَ لَهُ قَرينا

For it is enough for you that your panegyrist is Ibn Hani,

It suffices you that your rain cloud is Ibn Hani

And that you have become his peer.

And that you have become his companion
