    فَعَلَّمَني آيَ العُلا كَيفَ تُكتَبُ

    I glimpsed the majesty of Eid, the people awestruck;

It taught me how the verses of glory are written.

My imagination pictured for me the caliphate's throne,

And it awed my heart, for majesty inspires awe.

Ask the wheeling firmament: has a star ever shone

Above a throne like this, or has a star ever set?

And has a sun ever shone upon a courtyard like the one

    Belonging to that Hamidian house?

And has a crowned ruler ever rested in fortune's constellation

As that diademed one has rested in Yildiz?

He shone upon the throne of majesty, and his crown

Beamed, while the throne's timbers bade him welcome.

He rose high upon it, while the East rejoiced and yearned

For his appearance, and the West watched, crestfallen.

So he rose at God's command, until there flourished

Through him Islam's spreading tree, while polytheism lay barren.

He brought the two mosques closer, seeking nearness

To the Most High King—how excellent is the favored one!

How often they tried on earth to extinguish his light,

Yet quenching the sun's light would be easier than that.

Then he terrified them with a heavily armed host of his,

Whose path lies in the cause of God and truth.

It draws so near the forms of death, it is as though

It had a goal between the claws of doom.

When it surges on the day of battle, one flank reels

Of earth and mountains, and another flank collapses.

The peaks of lofty mountains are its mount on land,

And the raging waves are its mount at sea.

May a band be your ransom, O Abd al-Hamid—

One that defied its Maker's command—and a wavering faction.

You hold every pass and ocean against them,

So neither land nor sea affords them escape.

The hands of the nights toss them about, as though

They were, through those nights, an example held up among men.

How often they begged those nights to let them kiss your hems, which

Trail above the orbs of the heavens.

    كَذَلِكَ يَشقى الخائِنُ المُتَقَلِّبُ

    Yet they attained no desire, nor achieved their hopes;

    Thus suffers the fickle traitor.

    يُهَنّيكَ بِالعيدَينِ شَرقٌ وَمَغرِبُ

    O master of the two Eids, may you ever remain safe;

East and West congratulate you on the two Eids.

For in every garden, from you come fragrance and freshness,

And in every land, from you come a festival and a procession.

I see Egypt, with some of its lights rose-hued,

    Some silvery, and some gilded.

Their shapes are varied: this is set in order,

That is scattered, and that is domed.

Some shine forth in lamps whose oil

Shines without fire, while some are electric.

    فَهَل أَنتَ يا بُستانُ أُفقٌ مُكَوكَبُ

    And I see the star shining in its garden;

Are you then, O garden, a star-studded horizon?

And throughout the world I hear a prayer for his victory,

Echoed by the Ancient House and Yathrib.
