كَمhow many وارِثٍan heir غَضِّfresh الشَبابِyouth رَمَيتِهِyou (feminine) afflicted him
كَم وارِثٍ غَضِّ الشَبابِ رَمَيتِهِ
بِغَرامِwith passion for راقِصَةٍa dancer وَحُبِّand love for هَلوكِa wanton woman
بِغَرامِ راقِصَةٍ وَحُبِّ هَلوكِ
How many an heir in the bloom of youth have you afflicted
How many a youth in the prime of his life
With passion for a dancer and love for a wanton woman!
Have you struck down with love of a dancing girl,
أَلبَستِهِyou (feminine) clothed him الثَوبَينِthe two garments فيin حالَيهِماtheir two states
أَلبَستِهِ الثَوبَينِ في حالَيهِما
تيهَthe arrogance الغَنِيِّof the rich man وَذِلَّةِand the humiliation المَفلوكِof the pauper
تيهَ الغَنِيِّ وَذِلَّةِ المَفلوكِ
You clothed him in the two garments, in both their states:
Clothing him in rags and tatters,
The rich man's arrogance and the pauper's humiliation.
Wandering lost, humbled and broken.
