Greed cast the veil off the West.

Awake, then, O East, and beware of falling asleep.

    And carry, O sun, to

All who dwell in the East a greeting of peace.

And bear witness on the Day of Mutual Calling that we

Have died with honor in the cause of truth.

The earth swayed beneath us when it grew drunk

On the blood of the slain, lawful and unlawful alike.

The Italians were powerless against our heroes,

So they made the sword drink again from our children.

They shackled them, killed them, mutilated

Women in their curtained chambers, and struck down the orphans.

They slaughtered the aged and the disabled, and did not

Show mercy to a child, nor leave a boy alive.

They burned the houses, deemed lawful all that

The Hague had forbidden by treaty, out of respect.

    فَسَلوهُ بارَكَ القَومَ عَلاما

    The metropolitan bishop blessed their deeds;

So ask him: what did he bless these people for?

Did their Gospel come to them with this,

Commanding and spreading peace upon the earth?

They revealed to us the West's intent,

And cleared the darkness from the East's horizon.

So we read it in lines of blood:

It swore to devour the East utterly.

They launched the fleet upon the sea, just as

A pigeon-keeper releases pigeons into the air.

So it went only a little way, then turned back,

Bearing tidings of misfortune and defeat.

    فَدَعوهُم يَملَئوا الدُنيا كَلاما

    We have filled the land with their torn limbs;

So let them fill the world with talk.

They declared war, and we secretly planned for them

Destruction and death wherever they landed.

Tell Victor, on our behalf, that he

Has astonished the world in war and discipline.

He astonished the world when they saw

    His army outrun the ostriches.

It remained on land only long enough

To yield up its lives or cast away the reins.

O Hatim of the Italians, you have bestowed upon us

A favor we remember year after year.

    You gave us equipment,

And clothing, and drink, and food,

And weapons which in your hands

Were blunt, but came to cleave bones.

Take more outings through our settlements

And our hills: such outings cure sickness.

And hold a festival every year

That feeds our orphans and widows to their fill.

I do not know: have you come to shepherd a nation

Of Italians, or are you shepherding grazing herds?

What ails them, when victory is their custom?

They clung to the coast in fear and for protection.

They escaped from Vesuvius's fire into

The fire of a war that blazed no less fiercely.

Vesuvius was no more dreadful with its lava

Than cannonballs spewing swift, terrible death.

Come now, Vesuvius, sleep and leave them be, for

Africa has shaken off her sleep.

So she is a volcano against them, harnessed by

The Master of dominion for requital and vengeance.

Had they known what the East had hidden for them,

They would have preferred Vesuvius and chosen to stay.

Such is the fate of a treacherous nation

That breaks its covenant and honors no pledges.

Such is the fate of every tyrant who transgresses,

Or grows haughty, or feigns blindness to the truth.

Had Rome known what had befallen her

In Tripoli, she would have accepted nothing but division.

And every socialist there would have refused

To see the crown remain upon a head.

They announced the annexation of our lands to

    Victor's realm, without fearing reproach.

They proclaimed annexation, though they had not yet conquered

Even a fingernail's breadth, behind or ahead.

So marvel at a conqueror of such might,

Who counts an outing at sea as combat,

And regards conquest as a baseless claim,

And fabrication, protest, and recourse to arbitration.

O you bewildered at sea, draw near

To the Bosporus's protected domain, if you are valiant.

How often we have heard, from lightning's tongue, what

Alarms the world whenever the fleet sets sail!

It sailed for two months, yet opened nothing but

A chasm into which millions tumbled.

They buried their history at its bottom,

And flung glory, still a boy, after it.

So be at ease, O nations of the East, and do not

Despair today, for good fortune has arisen.

Indeed, within our ribs are hearts

That love glory and refuse to be wronged.
