God bless you—what a man you would have been,

Had death's ravages granted you respite!

A character like the breaths of gardens when

    They greet dawn after a rain-cloud's downpour;

And qualities which, if they were blended

    With the tempers of the days, would never change;

    Abundant in merits, above suspicion,

Abundant in humility, yet never debased.

O realm of virtue, walking proudly

In the loveliest robes bestowed by Qasim,

How were you folded away with him so swiftly?

Is this how kingdoms meet their downfall?

O star rising for the East, so relentlessly pursued by

The direst ill fortune that you settled in Saturn!

Why did you not continue your night journey, moving on?

Perhaps good fortune lay in those shifts.

Why do I see the graves adorned,

And see the Nile's lands stripped of adornment?

And whenever Egypt, the Quiver, brings forth a man,

    Fate strikes that man down.

And must it be that whenever I send an elegy

Of my tears in the wake of one departed,

Another stirs buried sorrow within me,

So I link the tear-streams of my eyes?

If, in the loss that struck me, I am failed by

My poetry, then these tears intercede for me.

And I do say—nor can I be rivaled

In impromptu speech by any improviser's words—

O utterer of proverbs, who sets them forth,

After you, an utterer of proverbs is hard to find.

O fletcher of opinions that strike true,

Who shoots them at the vital spots of folly,

God bless the opinions with which you outstripped

The geniuses of old among the immortals!

You were the most wretched of us because of us; and so

The high-minded suffer in the company of the helpless.

Alas for you! You died suddenly,

Without complaint, last wishes, or a word.

Fate shackled the hand of Justice; the latter

Weeps for you, while the former rejoices.

Four things kept you from your worldly concerns,

Though a man is engrossed in his worldly affairs:

A right you championed, and an honor

    You pursued without false pretension;

And truths of knowledge you sought,

    Beyond a sage's power to grasp;

And a virtue that eluded others, never

Extending a hand to them, nor could they reach it.

If you held a view on the veil and were not

Infallible—those heights belong to the messengers—

The final judgment belongs to the days

On what you held; so sleep, and do not ask.

And so the cooks of thought leave it

To time, which cooks it slowly.

And if you were right, you are the finest man

To place the remedy where the ailments lie.

Or if not, enough is what brought you honor

And the work you left behind in your world.

Alas for a house I passed by,

Desolate, though once a meeting place of paths!

There I spent freely all that was precious,

And there recalled the vigil at the ruins.

I asked it about Qasim, but it refused

To answer; so I went away distraught,

    Stumbling as weakness assailed me,

    Reeling like a drunken drinker,

Recalling through him the day of the Imam,

The day I sought out that hero,

The day I mourned—though still a man of hope—

The last remnant of hope beneath the earth.

Dwell beside your loved ones, who departed,

Taking resolve, daring, and action with them.

And tell them of the country's need for

Those wise minds amid this grave calamity.

Tell the Imam, when you meet him

In the two Gardens, with the noblest hospitality:

    Truth has become a target

For those riding the mounts of error.

God bless the works of yours that have endured!

Oblivion cried out to them, yet they did not vanish.

God bless the days of yours that passed!

Their benefactions lasted long, though the days did not.

How fine the shades—if only they had remained,

Or if any shade could ever be unchanging!
