لِلَّهِto God (expressing admiration) آثارٌmonuments هُناكَthere كَريمَةٌnoble
Berlin
By God, there are noble monuments there,
There are noble traces of God there,
Whose wondrous beauty Berlin envied.
Whose beauty envied Berlin's masterpieces.
طاحَتlaid low بِهاthem تِلكَthose المَدافِعُthe cannons تارَةًat one time
لَمّاwhen أَمَرتَyou commanded وَتارَةًand at another time زِبلينُZeppelin
Those cannons laid them low at times,
Those cannons once brought them down,
At your command; at others, Zeppelin did.
When you commanded, and then again Aspelin.
ماذاwhat رَأَيتُI have seen مِنَof النَبالَةِnobility وَالعُلاand grandeur
فيin عُدمِهِنَّtheir destruction وَكُلُّهُنَّand all of them عُيونُmasterpieces
What have I seen of nobility and grandeur
What nobility and glory I saw in their absence,
In their destruction, when all were masterpieces?
Though all of them are eyes.
لَوif أَنَّthat فيin بِرلينَBerlin عِندَكَin your possession مِثلَهاtheir like
لَعَرَفتَyou would have known كَيفَhow تُجِلُّهاhonor them وَتَصونُand preserve
Had you their like in Berlin,
If you had the likes of them in Berlin,
You would have known how to honor and preserve them.
You would have honored and protected them.
إِنif كُنتَyou were أَنتَyou yourself هَدَمتَyou demolished رِمسَReims فَإِنَّهُthen indeed it
أَودىbrought ruin بِمَجدِكَto your glory رُكنُهاits pillar المَوهونُweakened
If you yourself demolished Reims, then surely
Though you destroyed Persepolis,
Its weakened pillar has brought your glory to ruin.
Its fallen pillar brought down your glory.
لَمdid not يُغنِoffer protection عَنهاfor it مَعبَدٌa sanctuary خَرَّبتَهُyou ravaged it
ظُلماًunjustly وَلَمand not يُمسِكhold back عِنانَكَyour reins دينُreligion
It gained no protection from the sanctuary you ravaged
A temple you unjustly destroyed could not avail it,
Unjustly; nor did religion hold back your reins.
Nor could religion restrain you.
لاdo not تَحسَبَنَّsuppose (emphatically) الفَخرَglory ماwhat أَحرَزتَهُyou have won it
الفَخرُglory بِالذِكرِto remembrance الجَميلِhonorable رَهينُbound
Never think that glory is what you have won;
Do not think your pride lies in what you seized -
Glory is bound to honorable remembrance.
True pride lies in good repute held captive.
هَلhave? شِدتَyou built فيin بِرلينَBerlin غَيرَother than مُعَسكَرٍa military camp
قامَتrose عَلَيهِupon it مَعاقِلٌstrongholds وَحُصونُand fortresses
Have you built anything in Berlin but a military camp,
Did you pitch any camp in Berlin but soldiers'?
On which strongholds and fortresses rose?
On which stood forts and impregnable castles?
وَجَمَعتَand you gathered شَعبَكَyour people كُلَّهُall of them فيin قَبضَةٍa grip
إِنif لَمnot تَكُنit had لانَتloosened فَسَوفَthen will تَلينُloosen
And gathered all your people into a single grip,
You gathered all your people in one fist -
If it has not yet loosened, it will loosen.
If you do not relent, you will bend.
نَظَمَتstrung together تِجارَتُكَyour commerce المَدائِنَthe cities وَالقُرىand the villages
فَالنيلُso the Nile ناءَwas weighed down بِهاwith it وَناءَand was weighed down السينُthe Seine
Your commerce strung cities and villages together;
Your trade organized cities and villages,
So the Nile was weighed down by it, and so was the Seine.
The Nile irrigated through it, and Sinai.
فَبِكُلِّso in every أَرضٍland مِنof رِجالِكَyour men عُصبَةٌa band
وَبِكُلِّand on every بَحرٍsea مِنfrom لَدُنكَyour side سَفينُships
So in every land is a band of your men,
In every land are bands of your men,
And on every sea are ships of yours,
And in every sea are ships from your coast.
تَسريsail by night وَنَسرُكَand your eagle أَينَwherever لُحنَthey appeared يُظِلُّهاshades them
لاneither اللَيثُthe lion يُزعِجُهاdisturbs them وَلاnor التِنّينُthe dragon
They sail by night, and your eagle shades them wherever they appear;
You march and soar - where is the melody that shades them?
Neither the lion nor the dragon disturbs them.
Neither lion disquiets them, nor dragon.
فَالأَمرُso the command أَمرُكَyour command وَالمُهَنَّدُand the Indian-steel sword مُغمَدٌsheathed
وَالنَهيُand the prohibition نَهيُكَyour prohibition وَالسُرىand night travel مَأمونُsafe
So command is yours, and the Indian-steel sword is sheathed;
The command is yours, the unsheathed sword quiescent,
And yours is the power to forbid, and night travel is safe.
The prohibition yours, the journey secured.
قَدindeed كانَwere فيin بِرلينَBerlin شَعبُكَyour people وادِعاًat peace
يَستَعمِرُcolonizes الأَسواقَthe markets وَهيَwhile they were سُكونُtranquility
Your people had been at peace in Berlin,
Once your people in Berlin were peaceful,
Colonizing the markets while they lay tranquil;
Filling markets while at rest.
فُتِحَتwere opened لَهُto them أَبوابُهاtheir gates فَسَبيلُهاso access to them
وَقفٌreserved عَلَيهِfor them وَرِزقُهُand their livelihood مَضمونُguaranteed
Their gates were opened to them, so access to them
Its gates opened to them, their way
Was reserved for them, and their livelihood guaranteed.
Stopped for them, their livelihood assured.
فَعَلامَso why? أَرهَقتَyou afflicted الوَرىmankind وَأَثَرتَهاand you unleashed it
شَعواءَraging فيهاwithin it لِلهَلاكِfor destruction فُنونُvarieties
Why, then, did you afflict mankind and unleash war,
Why then did you burden the world and harm it,
Raging, with many forms of destruction within it?
Unleashing on it skills for destruction?
تَاللَهِby God لَوif نُصِرَتwere granted victory جُيوشُكَyour armies لِاِنطَوىwould have ended
أَجَلُthe lifespan السَلامِpeace وَأَقفَرَand would have become desolate المَسكونُthe inhabited world
By God, had your armies triumphed, an end would have come to
By God, if your armies gained victory,
The life of peace, and the inhabited world would have lain desolate.
The age of peace would end and the inhabited world would empty.
سَبعونَseventy مِليوناًmillion إِذاif وَزَّعتَهاyou distributed them
بَينَamong الحَواضِرِthe cities نالَناwould reach us مِليونُa million
Seventy million—if you distributed them
Seventy million - if you distributed them
Among the cities, a million would come to us.
Among cities, we would get one million.
وَيلٌwoe لِمَنto whoever يَستَعمِرونَthey colonize بِلادَهُhis lands
القَحطُfamine أَيسَرُthe least severe خَطبِهِhis affliction وَالهونُand humiliation
Woe to him whose lands they colonize!
Woe to those who colonize their countries!
Famine and humiliation are the least of his woes.
Famine is the easiest of their afflictions and lightest.
أَكثَرتَyou made much مِنof ذِكرِmention الإِلَهِGod تَوَرُّعاًout of piety
وَزَعَمتَand you claimed أَنَّكَthat you مُرسَلٌa messenger وَأَمينُand trustworthy
You have often spoken of God, out of piety,
You excessively mention God in piety
And claimed that you were a messenger and trustworthy.
And claim to be a messenger and trustee.
عَجَباًhow strange! أَتَذكُرُهُdo you mention Him? وَتَملَأُand fill كَونَهُHis universe
وَيلاًmisery لِيَنعَمَso that they may live in ease شَعبُكَyour people المَغبونُwronged
How strange! Do you mention Him and fill His universe
Wonders! You remember Him and His creation fills,
With misery, so that your wronged people may live in ease?
Yet woe that your deluded people live in bliss!
وَكَذَلِكَand likewise القَصّابُthe butcher يَذكُرُmentions رَبَّهُhis Lord
وَالنَصلُand the blade فيin عُنُقِthe neck الذَبيحِthe slaughtered victim دَفينُburied
So too the butcher invokes his Lord,
Thus the butcher remembers his Lord
While the blade lies buried in the slaughtered victim's neck.
While the knife remains in the slaughtered's neck buried.
