At your gate are ill fortune and good fortune,

And there despair and hope take their stand.

And the Jews have been bewildered by you,

O place where good fortune and misery rise!

And your face, smiling and frowning—

Eloquence has fallen short of describing it.

How many sheets have been inscribed before it

With the apportionment of honor and humiliation!

    يَهتَزُّ مِن خَوفِها الزَمان

    And heads have been bowed before it;

Time trembles in fear of them.

And how many delegations have circled it,

And multiplied their prayers around it!

So one profits, his star fortunate,

And a covetous man comes away with loss.

    When the crier's shout rose,

And the people fell into distress,

And the country's wealth girded itself,

    And earth and sky clamored,

I was content with cotton in pillows,

    And in mattresses and coverings.

And the truly wise and prudent man

Is he who walks the path of safety.

By God, my people, go no further,

    For your hopes are dust.

    Speculations are death itself,

And their messengers are the letters of telegrams.

Their practitioners' morning draught is calamity,

And they have no evening draught but calamity.

They have destroyed the lives of humankind

With the arrows of treachery and ingratitude.

Their fall is death, and their rise

Is a kind of misery and affliction.

And they make no pledges to their practitioners

    Except such as women make.

How many a bale has caused disaster,

And resembled the gleam of a mirage!

And many a seed has brought forth madness,

And borne the fruit of swift ruin!

And how many a rich man has squandered money,

And grown gray at the reckoning!

So let the distant one among you take warning,

And let the man of wealth fear God.

    For that merchant, the martyr,

Has spurned life because of them.
