    I do not thrust myself upon a friend, nor do I see myself

    seeking the wealth of a scowling rich man.

    Nor do I follow the obstinate man who flaunts his friendship

    over me, nor do I shun one who draws near.

    I do not exult when Time delights me,

    nor grow distraught at its ever-changing turns.

    وَلَكِن مَتّى أُحمَل عَلى الشَرِ أَركَبِ

    Nor do I wish for strife while strife leaves me alone;

    but whenever I am driven to strife, I ride into it.

    مَتّى ما يُحَرِّبكَ ابنُ عَمِّكَ تَحرَبِ

    And my kinsman enraged me until I fell upon him;

    whenever your cousin enrages you, you grow enraged.

    People do not acknowledge Time's due,

    nor does Time make amends for what they hate.

    And Time has, from a man's family and ancestral wealth,

    a share like the cut of a butcher carving into portions.
