    Alone—with fever, your phantom, and poetry.

    I ask my life: how were you scattered, O my life?

    The days pass me by; their dawn resembles

    their darkness; I have found joy in neither night nor dawn.

    I soothe myself with illusions, as one lamented

    to the mirage across the wasteland, thirsting in the waste.

    And from hopes I sip a cup whose hangover

    creeps through a heart that has never tasted wine's rapture.

    From storm to storm, O heart, do we go?

    Has the sailor not wearied of the sea's roar?

    إلى موقف دام على راحة الهجر

    And from a weeping moment in reunion's arms

    to a bleeding moment on separation's palm;

    and from the blow of a sword that slept between my ribs

    to the blow of a spear that began burrowing into my back.

    Ah, grant me a moment's calm—perhaps a moment's calm

    will gather the scattered fragments of my doubts and thoughts.

    O my Salma, O full moon whose gleam I glimpsed

    on a horizon unaccustomed to the full moon.

    و كيف ذرعت اليأس أحلم بالنصر

    Take from my eyes my story and my features,

    and how I traversed despair, dreaming of victory;

    فعدت جريح العين و اليد و الصدر

    and how I kept company with people until I knew them,

    then returned wounded in eye, hand, and chest;

    فعدت بلا روح أعض على العشر

    and how I gave glory my soul, and it sold it;

    so I returned without a soul, biting my ten fingers.

    O my Salma, if Time gave me my soul,

    I would give it to you—but it is Time's bondwoman.

    He keeps toying with it—have you seen a nightingale

    wounded, singing while in the falcon's grip?

    He soothes it with poverty at times, and with wealth,

    and deceives it now with poetry, now with prose.

    Shall I give you my pains—shall I give you my choking grief?

    Shall I give you a silent garden with downcast blossoms?

    I seek protection for you from wretched love, and from passion

    crippled, and from longing cloaked in terror.

    Another beholds stars in your eyes,

    and I glimpse in them the night, veil upon veil.

    Another sings you every cherished tune,

    and I sing—yet sing nothing but lament upon my lips.

    And another offers you pearls—alas for a poet

    who says, "Take from me poems like pearls."

    أخاف عليه و هو طفل من الكسر

    O my Salma, do not place your heart in my hand;

    I fear it may break, a child as it is.

    And do not shed your precious tears over a man

    who has learned that tears are a form of deceit.

    وفى فأجابته الخلائق بالغدر

    He loved, and humankind repaid him with sorrow;

    he kept faith, and humankind answered him with betrayal.

    When he says, "I love," experiences call him a liar,

    stained with sorrow and bitter pain.

    Leave him to his world, for he has grown used to misery,

    and grown addicted to long wandering through the rugged waste.

    As though the nights had sworn never to let him taste

    peace or hope except in the darkness of the grave.
