أراد ربك إرسالَ ابنه فأتى

from heaven, bearing news and tidings.

From heaven, with knowledge and tidings.

يحل في بطن بكرٍ وهي ظاهرةٌ

وثديها بحليب البر مدرار

He dwells in a virgin’s womb, while she stands manifest,

He dwells in a virgin’s womb, and she is manifest,

her breast flowing richly with the milk of righteousness.

And her breast flows abundantly with the milk of righteousness.

هذا هو السر جبريل البشير به

هذا هو السر جبريل البشير به

مبشرٌ أمه والسرُّ أسرار

مبشرٌ أمه والسرُّ أسرار

This is the mystery of which Gabriel is the herald,

This is the mystery: Gabriel, its herald,

bringing glad tidings to His mother—and the mystery is mysteries upon mysteries.

Brings glad tidings to his mother; the mystery is manifold.

بكرٌ مقدسةٌ بالإبن مُنفَسةٌ

بكرٌ مقدسةٌ بالإبن مُنفَسةٌ

طهرٌ تُعزِّي نفوساً شانها العار

طهرٌ تُعزِّي نفوساً شانها العار

A holy virgin, made precious through the Son,

A sanctified virgin, delivered of the Son,

a purity consoling souls whose lot is shame:

A pure one, she consoles souls marred by shame—

عار الخطيئة من جدٍّ ومن عملٍ

عار الخطيئة من جدٍّ ومن عملٍ

والجارُ يلطخه من إثمه الجار

والجارُ يلطخه من إثمه الجار

the shame of sin—from a forefather and from one’s own act—

The shame of sin, from an ancestor and from deeds;

and neighbor, through his sin, stains neighbor.

And one neighbor stains another with his own sin.
