أذكرتَ مسكاً من مديحك صائكا

أذكرتَ مسكاً من مديحك صائكا

مذ كان فكري في نظامك حائكا

مذ كان فكري في نظامك حائكا

You brought to mind fragrant musk from praise of you,

I remembered a sweet scent of your praise exhaling

Since my thought was weaving verses in your praise.

Since my mind was weaving your system

ورفعتَ فوق الفرقدين منازلاً

ورفعتَ فوق الفرقدين منازلاً

فيها علاك سنىً لعزمِك فاتِكا

فيها علاك سنىً لعزمِك فاتِكا

And you raised your stations above the two Farqad stars,

And you raised above the horizon homes

There your glory shines, and your resolve is deadly.

In which your determination made you an occupier

وحططتَ عزم الدهر حتى قال لي

وحططتَ عزم الدهر حتى قال لي

أن ليس لي نهجٌ لبأسك سالكا

أن ليس لي نهجٌ لبأسك سالكا

And you subdued Time's resolve until it said to me:

And you lowered the determination of time until it told me

"I have no path that leads to your might."

That it has no path to your might traversing

فرأتكَ آراءُ الملوك مسدِّداً

فرأتكَ آراءُ الملوك مسدِّداً

لثغورهم فأتوكَ فيها مالِكا

لثغورهم فأتوكَ فيها مالِكا

So the kings' counsels saw you as a guardian

So the visions of kings saw you

Of their frontiers; so they came to you, their ruler there.

Fortifying their borders, so they came to you as owners

فرعيتها وحميتها وحفظتها

فرعيتها وحميتها وحفظتها

حقّاً وغيرُك كان فيها آفكا

حقّاً وغيرُك كان فيها آفكا

So you tended them, defended them, and kept them safe,

So you shepherded them, protected them, and preserved them

Truly, while others there were deceitful.

Rightfully while others in it were being unfaithful

أتتِ الإمارةُ نحوكم منقادةً

أتتِ الإمارةُ نحوكم منقادةً

طوعاً وسيفُك في حماها سافكا

طوعاً وسيفُك في حماها سافكا

The emirate came toward you in submission,

The emirate came to you submissively

Willingly, while your sword shed blood within its domain.

Willingly while your sword in protecting it was pouring

هنَّأتُها من بعد ذلَّة غيركم

هنَّأتُها من بعد ذلَّة غيركم

عزَّت هنا والذل كان هنالكا

عزَّت هنا والذل كان هنالكا

I congratulated it after the humiliation of others;

I congratulated it after the humiliation of others

It gained honor here, while humiliation had been there.

It was honored here and humiliation was over there

هنَّأتُ دينَ اللَه فيكم قبلَها

هنَّأتُ دينَ اللَه فيكم قبلَها

مستدركاً بالمؤمنين مُداركا

مستدركاً بالمؤمنين مُداركا

Before that, I congratulated God's faith in you,

I congratulated Allah's religion through you before it

Making amends through the faithful, catching up with what was missed.

Making up for the believers missed opportunities

أدعو أميراً سامياً متساوياً

أدعو أميراً سامياً متساوياً

ونَميرَ فضلٍ لا يُريكَ مُشاركا

ونَميرَ فضلٍ لا يُريكَ مُشاركا

I call upon a lofty, even-handed emir,

I call upon a sublime equal prince

And a pure stream of bounty who shows you no peer.

And an outstanding grace that does not show you a partner

قد سد في وجه الضلال مغالقاً

قد سد في وجه الضلال مغالقاً

مذ شد للحق الصراح مسالكا

مذ شد للحق الصراح مسالكا

He has fastened locks in the face of error,

You closed the doors of misguidance in the face of deviation

Since he secured paths for manifest truth.

Since you steadied the sincerest paths for the truth

كم حاول الأعداء منه خيانةً

كم حاول الأعداء منه خيانةً

فخشوه حين رأوه ليثاً فاتكا

فخشوه حين رأوه ليثاً فاتكا

How often the enemies sought treachery from him,

How many times did the enemies try to betray him

So they feared him when they saw him as a deadly lion.

But they feared him when they saw him as a ferocious lion

يا من يذب بسيفه وسنانه

يا من يذب بسيفه وسنانه

عن قومه كن للعُداة مَهالكا

عن قومه كن للعُداة مَهالكا

O you who defend with your sword and spearpoint,

O you who sacrifice himself with his sword and his teeth

Your people—be the enemies' doom.

For his people, be to the enemies a destroyer

أشرقتَ في دين المسيح مبرهناً

أشرقتَ في دين المسيح مبرهناً

سبلَ الهدى مذ كان رأيُك باتكا

سبلَ الهدى مذ كان رأيُك باتكا

You shone in Christ's faith, demonstrating

You have shone in the religion of Christ demonstrating

The paths of guidance, since your judgment was decisive.

The paths of guidance since your opinion was insightful

للَه قَيلٌ في الملوك سَميدعٌ

للَه قَيلٌ في الملوك سَميدعٌ

أضحى بكم ثغرُ العدوِّ دَكادكا

أضحى بكم ثغرُ العدوِّ دَكادكا

To God belongs a magnanimous chieftain among kings!

To Allah, the kings have an argument

Through you, the enemy's border fortress became heaps of rubble.

Through you, the enemy frontier became crumbling

حصَّنتَ أرضاً حزتَها ومنازلاً

حصَّنتَ أرضاً حزتَها ومنازلاً

سُرَّت بكم فالثغر فيها ضاحكا

سُرَّت بكم فالثغر فيها ضاحكا

You fortified a land you had gained, and dwellings

You fortified a land, you conquered it, and homes

That rejoiced in you, so the frontier there was smiling.

That rejoiced through you so the frontier in it is smiling

مَنُعَت صياصيها فكُنَّ عواصماً

مَنُعَت صياصيها فكُنَّ عواصماً

بكمُ وكان النصر فيها سادكا

بكمُ وكان النصر فيها سادكا

Its fortresses grew impregnable and became defensive refuges

Its whistles were prevented so you became fortresses

Through you, while victory dwelt steadfastly there.

Through you and victory in it was assisting

عزت بكم مذ ذلَّ فيها غيركم

عزت بكم مذ ذلَّ فيها غيركم

فلُجَينُهم أضحى لديكم آنُكا

فلُجَينُهم أضحى لديكم آنُكا

It gained honor through you, since others were humbled there;

It was honored through you after being humiliated by others

So their silver became lead beside you.

So their shame became surrendering to you

للعز جاء رعاتُها ورعاعُها

للعز جاء رعاتُها ورعاعُها

وسُراتُها والذل أمسى هالكا

وسُراتُها والذل أمسى هالكا

To honor came its shepherds and its rabble,

To honor came its shepherds and commoners

And its nobles, while humiliation perished.

And its elites, and humiliation became perished

هذا كتابُ اللَه في عرصاتها

هذا كتابُ اللَه في عرصاتها

يتلَى فصار الوَغدُ فيها ناسكا

يتلَى فصار الوَغدُ فيها ناسكا

This is God's Book in its open squares,

This is God's book in its plains

Being recited, so the base man there became an ascetic.

Being recited so the wicked among it became devout

لا زلتَ منتصراً وسعدُك صاعدٌ

لا زلتَ منتصراً وسعدُك صاعدٌ

واللَه يوقف في حِماك ملائكا

واللَه يوقف في حِماك ملائكا

May you ever remain victorious, your fortune rising,

You still are victorious and your luck is rising

And God stations angels in your protected domain.

And Allah halts for your protection angels

نم ها صروفُ الدهر عنك نوائمٌ

نم ها صروفُ الدهر عنك نوائمٌ

فترى رؤوسَ عداك منك سنابكا

فترى رؤوسَ عداك منك سنابكا

Sleep—behold, Time's vicissitudes lie asleep away from you.

Sleep turned away from you

So you will see your enemies' heads as hooves beneath you,

So you see the heads of your enemies from you snapped

حتى ترى فيها شموسَك طُلَّعاً

حتى ترى فيها شموسَك طُلَّعاً

شرقاً وشمسَ عِداك عنكم دالِكا

شرقاً وشمسَ عِداك عنكم دالِكا

Until you see your suns rising there,

Until you see in it your suns rising

In the east, while your foes' sun sets away from you.

East, and the sun of your enemies away from you vanished
