    What eye, then, would not flutter and shed tears,

    Or what heart would not soften and ache

    At the calamities of time, treacherous to its people?

    For it is an arrow, and we its killing ground.

    Our lifespans and their recurring rounds are like

    Water falling from a lofty height, rushing downward.

    ومضيُّها كمضيه لا يرجع

    Its pleasures are tangled dreams gone by;

    Their passage, like its passage, never turns back.

    If this is its condition beside our own,

    Why do we not rest from seeking its water?

    Ah, for a state that never turns from wasting sorrow!

    Then banish a heart that does not lament and coo.

    من لي بنمّامٍ يَنِمُّ فيُمنَع

    Between my eyelid and tears there is affection;

    Who will bring a talebearer to disclose it, so weeping may be checked?

    هل من فتىً شَمْلَ المودة يَجمع

    The heart has forsaken my breast in its grief;

    Is there a youth to restore the bonds of affection?

    O separation, why have you settled in my quarters,

    While loved ones sleep within my dwellings?

    والرعد تسبقه البروق اللُّمَّع

    I am afraid, and I am not the first to fear;

    Thunder is preceded by flashing lightning.

    How many an unsuspecting one have you taken unawares!

    You are not the first traitor who feels no fear.

    The wicked one shows the innocent gentleness,

    So one is deceived by him, though he is a black-and-white wolf.

    Your croaking raven has driven away the one

    Whose love had come to graze within my heart.

    Thus the companion has lost his companion,

    And his dwellings, without him, are desolate ruins.

    والبدر يحجبه الغمام الأسفع

    Whoever believes the days knows nothing of their lies;

    The full moon is veiled by dusky clouds.

    And if the hypocrite says, 'I am truthful,'

    Know that the truth in him is fabricated.

    O monk whom the snares of enemies feared,

    Who escaped—yet death's snares cannot be averted!

    O you, when I called your name aloud, saying

    'Arsenius,' you answered me, 'I cannot hear.'

    Leave me: how can someone answer, standing

    As a target, while death's weapons are leveled?

    Death drew against me the keen sword of its decree,

    While I am a stranger in these lands, abandoned.

    From that oppression I have no luster left,

    Or appearance, or inward substance, or sound.

    O separation, before I die, tell my brothers,

    That perhaps they may intercede for their brother.

    And when you pass my mother's grave, tell her

    With a sign whose meaning the grief-stricken understand:

    من بعد غربته يزور ويرجع

    Arsenius has come to his mother today;

    After his exile, he visits and returns.

    Restrain your tears: you are not the first bereaved

    Of me; it is tears that have stirred your grief.

    O dwellers of al-Shahba, have I among you

    A friend, yet veiled in coyness?

    In Lebanon I parted from his companionable face,

    And lost it—how lovely was that dawning face!

    So I lost him somewhere between Lebanon and

    Aleppo; I am both lost and one who has lost.

    O you who left me grieving after your passing,

    A byword borne by all four winds!

    تفديك عني مهجةٌ تتقطَّع

    A remnant of life has torn my heart's collar for you;

    May a soul torn apart ransom you on my behalf.

    ناهيك من قلبٍ عليك يُصدَّع

    I have indeed shattered a yearning heart over you;

    What a heart it is, shattered over you!

    The news of your death—if its effects were seen

    By a faithless heart, it would turn away aching.

    On Tuesday, its sorrow clothed me

    In a garment, but one studded with tears.

    O loss of my heart, my beloved, and my home!

    Three they are, yet in them the calamity is fourfold.

    Yet in my heart it is black and darkened!

    O departing one, with whom my heart departs

    In longing—will a love-struck heart return?

    You were a secret hidden in my inmost self,

    Then death, that foulest enemy, betrayed you.

    So my heart became empty of you, just as

    I became empty of it; now it is lost.

    How lovely verses are when set with jewels!

    هذا وذاك مُضيَّعٌ ومُشيَّع

    My brother and my heart traveled away from me together;

    This one and that, lost and escorted to burial.

    So he and I both bid farewell and are bid farewell.

    Arsenius, I am torn apart over you,

    For all time, and pained by your absence.

    In exile, where a place for him was hard to find.

    The stranger died in estrangement, in a strange land,

    Far from his monastery and his homes—if only you could hear!

    And imperfection is enamored of the virtuous.
