Trust: sorrows are but a constricting refinement,
Trust that sorrows are but a narrow shackle,
and through their refining the faithful, most truthful one emerges.
And through its shackles the honest appear most truthful.

A fire in which the iron of misfortunes melts.

The water of decay in its folds drips.

And in praising Mary the Virgin, I put on
And I have worn in praise of the virgin Mary
the robe of hope, as though it were rich silk brocade.
The dress of aspiration as if it is silk brocade.

Through her my worth rises, and my verse among mankind
With her my poetic passion and poetry soars in creation
flourishes, as though through her I were eloquent and masterful.
Blossoming as if with her my clear poetry splits.
ورفعتand I raised فيهاfor her لواءَthe banner of مدحيmy praise ظاهراًdisplayed

And for her I raised the banner of my praise, displayed
And with her I have raised the banner of my open praise
across East and West, as though my praise were a standard.
In the two horizons as if my praise is a blazing fire.
قدindeed حصَّنتنيshe fortified me منagainst عدوٍّan enemy ماردٍrebellious

She has fortified me against a rebellious foe
She has fortified me from a stubborn enemy
by her protection, as though my fortress were a fortified palace.
In her vicinity as if my fortress is an imposing wall.
حتىuntil غرقتُI drowned بمدحهاin praising her وبحمدهاand in thanking her
وغريقُهاand one drowned in her بجهنّمٍin Hell لاnot يغرقdrowns
Until I drowned in praising and thanking her;
Until I drowned in praising her and glorifying her
and one drowned in her does not drown in Hell.
And the drowned in Hell do not drown.

Thus you see the enemy yearning to praise her,
You see the enemy yearning for her praise
and yearning for the glories of her excellence.
And for the merits of her superiority they yearn.

Enemies have borne witness for her; exalted merit
The enemies have testified to her high favor
is what the foe has admitted and they have affirmed.
What the enemy has acknowledged and believed.
لاnot تلحقُovertake الآفاتcalamities يوماًever عبدَهاher servant

No calamities ever overtake her servant,
Afflictions never reach her servant one day
and seeking what cannot be overtaken is impossible.
And seeking what cannot be attained is impossible.

As though through her might he were in a stronghold,
It's as if he is in the refuge of her might
and she were an encircling wall about his refuge.
And as if she is his protection, an imposing fence.

I call on you, O sovereign lady, never attacked
I call upon you, O Queen never fought
without the factions of the foes being torn apart.
Except the parties of enemies are torn.

Rise to my aid: your resolve alone
Rise to my victory, your resolve alone
is to the foes a fearsome army, a legion.
To the enemies is a formidable mobilizing army.

Your banners of victory fluttered; as soon as they saw
The flags of victory fluttered from you, so when
your standards, the enemies failed, every one.
Your banners saw them, the enemies fled in haste.

Others close the door to their generous gifts,
Except you, the door of the abundance of its access is closed
but the door of your generosity is never shut.
But your generosity, its door does not close.

Indeed, I kept vigil in your praise through a night;
And I have stayed up praising you a night when
the morning swore that it would not rise.
Morning swore that it will not rise.

And I lay sleepless until my longing for you declared:
And I was sleepless until my passion for you said
“Sleeplessness upon sleeplessness—and one like me lies sleepless.”
Sleepless upon sleepless, and the like of me stays awake.
