Sufficient for you, O monk, if you have been remiss

In prayer and have been slothful today,

Is the aid of a procession of monks who have risen

By night for their bell, now that the hour has come.

Do not complain of distress on a night when you rise, clad

In the robe of prayer that night, if you are keeping vigil.

Iblis rejoices when he finds you dispirited,

And never ceases to show you gain as loss.

He shows you weakness in a body now falling short

Of prayer, and a resolve now turned to failure.

He signals to you to return and lie down

On the bed, too drowsy for chanting.

So do not trust words without testing them.

    Indeed, devils do not harm monks;

    But in their struggle they blunted their sword-edges;

They turned away and never in their lives sided with a devil.

And God sent a sluggard back the way he came,

Away from Him, and admitted a watchful man into Paradise.

Stand like a pillar, upright before your Lord

At prayer time, and thirst for righteousness.

In this you equal an angel, O dust; and who

Has ever seen an angel imitate a human?
