عنfrom منظرthe sight of اللَهGod العليthe Most High علىabove الورىall creation
Sorrow darkens souls, and thereby leads them astray
Sorrow darkens souls and leads them astray
from the vision of God, the Most High above all creation.
from the sight of God, exalted above all creation.
فتظلُّso they remain تخبطfloundering فيin قنوطٍdespair موبِقٍruinous
فتَعافُso they shun أنto تقراread وأنand to تتذكراremember
They remain floundering blindly in an obscure despair,
So they go on floundering in ruinous despair,
averse to reading and to remembering.
and shun reading and remembrance.
فيَصُدُّso withdraws عنهاfrom them كلُّall حُسنِthe beauty of عبادةٍworship
حتىuntil تظنthey think بأنهاthat they لنwill not تَظفراprevail
Then every beautiful act of worship turns away from them,
All the beauty of worship then withdraws from them,
until they think they will never prevail.
until they think they will not prevail.
فكأنهاso it is as though they وكأنهand as though it فيin ضمنهاtheir midst
دودٌworms يَشُدُّstrains بنابهwith its fang أنto يَنخَراgnaw
Thus each soul seems as though the sorrow within it
It is as though they—and sorrow within them—
were a worm sinking in its fang to gnaw away,
were worms, straining with their fangs to gnaw,
حتىuntil يراهاit sees them لاnot ترومthey seek وداعةًmeekness
وكذاكand likewise لاnot ترضىthey accept الكلامspeech الأطهراthe purest
until it sees the soul no longer seeking repose,
until it sees that they do not seek meekness
and likewise no longer willing to receive the purest words.
and likewise refuse the purest speech.
فارضَىso be content بحزنٍwith sorrow ترتجيهyou hope for it بتوبةٍthrough repentance
تظفرْyou will attain بطيبwith serenity of النفسthe soul منهfrom it بلاwithout مراdoubt
So accept a sorrow you hope for through repentance;
So be content with sorrow you seek through repentance;
from it you will gain peace of soul, beyond dispute.
from it you will gain serenity of soul, without doubt.
