Slowly, slowly, O singing drivers of the camels!

Indeed, their padded feet have trodden harshly upon breastbones.

And take us toward those dwellings at evening,

And soothe your eyes with the gathering of desired delights.

Dwellings whose darkness is a dawn by which one is guided—

How wondrous, then, an east amid the lands of sunset!

Over them mighty darkness sweeps, proclaiming

A close-kept secret encompassing noble virtues.

As though their radiance were a fire-bearer whose light appeared

Before the eye of a chilled man cast into the wastes.

You would take the lightning's flash on the horizon of their gloom

For a Milky Way of light, or a monk's lamps.

May rain water you to fullness, its downpour unceasing,

With the finest company and the most helpful companion.

How many rites I have known within their bounds,

In whose wake I cast off every fault-finder.

In those courtyards I kissed their mouths,

As I once kissed the lips of companions my own age.

I sought you while the crosswind raged between us,

Settling as a veil, like a shield raised in opposition.

And when it insisted on taking the fore in our encounter,

I broke its bonds, and it became like a companion,

With a glance that outstrips the steed as it surges,

And a resolve that blunts bright swords at their striking edges.

I kept traversing waste after waste,

Cleaving their deserts and every branching pass,

Until the hem of darkness appeared torn,

And within it the strand of starry pearls unraveled.

And the sanctuary's ruins and traces shone,

And when the light appeared, I said to my companion:

O friend, what is this that has gladdened the wastes

With radiance and filled the horizon on every side?

Deep-rooted in character, eminence, and gifts.

Yes, that is what I mean; I am not lying.

How lovely those dwellings, and how lovely the

One who goes round them one day to dispel faults!

And how lovely the fortress, its foundation secure,

Lofty in its buildings, splendor, and virtues!

It batters the adversary's mountain when it strikes,

And splits its summit without cutting blades.

Thus the fragrance of its precincts spread among a company

Who deemed remembering consequences the finest good deed.

No secret is divulged among them, nor does desire

Sway them amid separation and calamities.

And they have attained refinement in the school of piety,

And the smelting fire of experience has purified them.

I voiced my troubles to them while longing drove me

To wherever hopes lay, as noble camels are driven.

O dwellers in the settlement, by God, convey

My greeting to her who is dearest of my beloveds,

The refuge of humankind, my treasure on the day of my arrival,

When I come to God as a monk comes.

So at your service, Mary, then at your service: command me!

For I am obedient; never will I flee.

O branch of Jesse, you became the root of his salvation.

And do not marvel at the sun to the exclusion of the stars.

For she is preserved from every detractor's stain,

    Cleared of every fault-finder's accusation,

Truly purified by what was entrusted to her womb.

You rose above humankind and jinn, O best of budding maidens.

Her glory rose until it reached the lands of sunset.

O place where God's mysteries descend, my complaint

Is to you about the burdens of persistent sins.

I sought you, my mind darkened by sorrow,

Which had fettered my limbs and shoulders together.

    وحسبك خاطٍ قد أتاك كتائب

    Illuminate my gloom and have compassion for my abasement;

Let a sinner who has come to you repentant suffice for you.

For salvation lies only in your protection, which sustains me,

And right guidance only in your guidance, which stays beside me.

God's peace be upon you as long as a bird laments

On an arak bough with the wail of mourning women.

God's peace be upon you as long as the hills grow moist,

And the flower's mouth meets the pearls of the clouds.

God's peace be upon you as long as morning shines

With a sun that dispels the fabric of those piercing stars.

God's peace be upon you as long as a poet bestows

A daughter of thought, concealed behind veils.
