أزل يا شقيق الروح مني بقيتي

عسى من ذمائي ترتوي فيك غلتي

Remove, O soul's brother, what remains of me.

Perhaps my thirst within you will drink its fill of my blood.

ويا مهجتي ذوبي أسىً وتحرُّقاً

ويا زفرتي زيدي بوقدك لوعتي

O my heart's core, melt with sorrow and burning.

O my sigh, increase my anguish with your heat.

ويا كبدي رودي لذاتك مسكناً

يفيك وإلّا ذبت في ظل سكنتي

O my liver, seek yourself a dwelling.

Let it shelter you, or I shall melt in my dwelling's shade.

ويا صحتي إني لوصلك عائفٌ

فوصلك عندي أن تكوني فظيعتي

O my health, I shun union with you.

To be joined with you would be my calamity.

ويا حسن صبري فارتحل عن معالمي

وكن في عزاءٍ من بعادي وسلوتي

O fair patience, depart from every trace of me.

Find consolation in my distance and forgetfulness.

ويا عين سحّي من دموعٍ سخينةٍ

وشحّي علي بالمرائي البهية

O eye, pour out hot tears.

And spare me the lovely sights.

ويا لاعج الأحزان بالشوق خلني

ويا قلب بعداً لا تقم بعد مهجتي

O sting of sorrows, leave me with longing.

O heart, away with you; do not remain after my soul.

لا خير في قلبٍ عراه تقلبٌ

ولا خير فيما حزته من بقيتي

There is no good in a heart seized by change.

Nor in what I have kept of my remaining self.

لقد قومت نار الجوى من جوانحي

حنايا ضلوعي فهي غير حنية

The fire of longing has straightened, within me,

The curves of my ribs, so they no longer bend.

وقد محت الأهوال كنهي ومجثمي

وشخصي وجرمي ثم ظلي وخبرتي

Terrors have erased my being and my body,

My person, my substance, then my shadow and experience.

ولم يبق إلّا زفرةٌ لو أطلعتها

لعادت سموماً أحرقت كل نسمة

Nothing remains but a sigh; if I released it,

It would become a scorching wind that burns every breath.

وقد عادني من بعدها كل عائدٍ

بوهم مجازٍ لا بوهم حقيقة

After that, every visitor came to see me

With a figurative notion, not a true understanding.

وعدت بنفسٍ جاهدت في مصابها

فولت على أدبارها إذ تولت

I returned with a soul that struggled through its affliction,

Then turned back as it departed.

ترى فضلها من نوعها مثلما ترى

سواها إذا ما قسته بالطبيعة

You see its distinction among its kind, just as you see

The others when you measure it by nature.

فتعريفها في ذاتها غير مضمرٍ

ولا متوارٍ إذ عن الشخص ورت

Its definition in itself is not concealed,

Nor hidden when it has withdrawn from the person.

يريكهمُ آثارها من صفاتها

فتصدح عن معنىً خفيِّ السريرة

Its effects show you its qualities,

And proclaim a meaning hidden in the heart.

تراهم بجسمٍ خاملٍ غير حاملٍ

غوائلها لما له قد أقلت

You see them in an inert body, unable to bear

Its perils, though it has borne what belongs to it.

ولو كان عبءُ الجسم للنفس حاملاً

وأن مزايا النفس فيه استعدت

If the body's burden supported the soul,

And the soul's virtues were readied within it,

لما كان أحوج فعلها من قوامها

طبيباً يداوي منهما كل علة

Its acts would not so badly need, for their soundness,

A physician to heal every ailment of both.

ولا كان أدى شأنها من شتاتها

لبعثٍ شريفٍ من مبانٍ قصية

Nor would its scattered condition have required

A noble raising from distant foundations,

لحسم أذاءٍ ذائعٍ من نكالها

أشاعت به داء الطغاة المضلة

To end the widespread harm of its punishment,

By which it spread the tyrants' disease of error.

أتاها إلهٌ من على العرش مقبلٌ

تقمص جسم الإنس حب البرية

God came to it, descending from the throne,

And assumed a human body out of love for creation.

أتاها وكانت بالعمى قد تبرقعت

فعوضها عنه بعينٍ صحيحة

He came when blindness veiled it,

And gave it a sound eye instead.

أتاها ويم الإثم في الأرض زاخرٌ

يكسّر سفناً كالحصون المنيعة

He came while the sea of sin swelled on earth,

Breaking ships like mighty fortresses.

ترى الناس كالجيشين في موقف الوغى

وكلٌّ يسوق النفس نحو المنية

You see people like two armies on a battlefield,

Each driving souls toward death.

عليهم دلاص الزغف من تحت مغفرٍ

على أعوجٍ كالصبح أو كالدجنة

They wear supple coats of mail beneath helmets,

Mounted on steeds, in daylight or darkness.

أتاهم ربّاً خاضعاً متجسداً

وقد حجب اللاهوت ناسوت بشرة

He came to them as a humble, embodied Lord,

His divinity veiled by human flesh.

وأنشا يقول الحق والحق واضحٌ

بأنوار آثار العلوم الجلية

He began to speak truth, and truth is clear

Through the lights of manifest knowledge.

أنا كنت قبل القَبلِ في أزليتي

وإنيَ بعد البَعد في أبديتي

I was before all beginnings in my eternity,

And I am beyond all endings in my everlastingness.

أنا كنت قبل الأرض إذ هي لجةٌ

وطي السما في ضمن علم طويتي

I was before the earth, when it was a deep,

And before the folding of heaven, within my hidden knowledge.

أنا كنت من قبل الظلام ونورها

ومن قبل أرواح الجنان المنيرة

I was before darkness and its light,

And before the radiant spirits of paradise.

أنا كنت من قبل انفطار السما ومن

عليها وقبل الأرض من قبل فطرة

I was before the heavens were split, and before

Those upon them, and before earth's first formation.

انا كنت حقّاً قبل منبت نبتةٍ

وقبلَ بَها زهرٍ وإيناعِ ثمرة

I truly was before any plant took root,

Before the beauty of flowers and the ripening of fruit.

أنا كنت قبل الشمس بازغةً ضحىً

وقبل طلوع البدر في ليل ظلمة

I was before the sun rose at midday,

And before the full moon rose in the dark night.

أنا كنت من قبل الكواكب كلها

تقوم وتجري تحت طاعة حكمتي

I was before all the stars

Stood and moved in obedience to my wisdom.

أنا كنت قبل الكون والكون موجدٌ

بأمري وقبل الراسيات الوطيدة

I was before the universe, which was brought into being

By my command, and before the steadfast mountains.

أنا كنت حقّاً قبل خلقة آدمٍ

وبي وبأمري كان خلق البرية

I truly was before Adam's creation,

And by me and my command creation came to be.

أنا كنت في الفردوس أقضي وآدمٌ

يميس بثوب الأمن في كل قبلة

I ruled in paradise while Adam

Strutted in the robe of safety in every direction.

أنا كنت لما ضل تيهاً لجهله

وأخرج منها ساحباً ذيل خجلة

I was there when, in ignorance, he wandered astray

And left it, trailing the hem of shame.

أنا كنت من أخنوخ لما ارتقى إلى ال

سماء بأمري لاقتضاء المشية

I was with Enoch when he ascended to the

Heaven by my command, in fulfillment of the will.

أنا كنت مع نوحٍ بطوفان مائه

أقيه ثجاج الماء ضمن السفينة

I was with Noah during the flood,

Shielding him in the ark from the pouring waters.

أنا كنت مع إبرام وهو مهاجرٌ

إطاعة أمري نحو أرضٍ غريبة

I was with Abram as he migrated

In obedience to my command toward a strange land.

أنا كنت مع إسحق في يوم نحره

وفدَّيته بالكبش أعني ببشرة

I was with Isaac on the day of his sacrifice,

And redeemed him with the ram, a figure of flesh.

أنا كنت مع يعقوب في يوم خوفه

وشرَّدتُ عنه العيش في كل بقعة

I was with Jacob on his day of fear,

And drove hardship from him wherever he lived.

أنا كنت مع يوسف لدى السجن مخبراً

وما فاز بالتقليد إلّا بمنحتي

I was with Joseph in prison, informing him,

And he gained office only through my gift.

أنا كنت مع أيوب يوم ابتلائه

وعوضته الأضعاف عن كل بلوة

I was with Job on the day of his trial,

And repaid him many times over for every ordeal.

أنا كنت مع موسى بمصر أمدُّه

برايات آياتٍ عليه تجلَّت

I was with Moses in Egypt, sustaining him

With banners of signs revealed to him.

أنا كنت مع شعبي بأرضٍ غريبةٍ

وخلَّصته من أسره بالأدلة

I was with my people in a strange land,

And delivered them from captivity through signs.

أنا كنت معه وهو في البحر سائرٌ

برجلٍ كمن يمشي على ظهر تربة

I was with them as they passed through the sea,

On foot as though walking on solid ground.

أنا كنت معه وهو في البر راحلٌ

أظلله من حر شمس الظهيرة

I was with them as they traveled by land,

Shading them from the midday sun's heat.

أنا كنت معه كل تأويب رحلةٍ

وإدلاج ترحالٍ بنارٍ مضيئة

I was with them at every evening stage of travel

And every night march, with a shining fire.

أنا كنت معه حين ملكته العدا

وأسقيتهم إرضاه كأس المنية

I was with them when enemies overpowered them,

And made those foes drink the cup of death for their sake.

أنا كنت حقّاً مع يشوع بحربه

وقد كان رد الشمس أهون قدرتي

I truly was with Joshua in his battle,

And holding back the sun was among my easier feats.

أنا كنت مع داود في حال ضيقه

ولم يتق الأخطار إلّا بجنتي

I was with David in his distress,

And he escaped danger only through my protection.

أنا كنت أعظم مغرمٍ بسليمنٍ

ولم يحتكم بالقوم إلّا بحكمتي

I greatly loved Solomon,

And he judged the people only by my wisdom.

أنا كنت مع يونان في البحر راسياً

وكنت بجوف الحوت معه بقوتي

I was with Jonah, afloat at sea,

And by my power was with him in the whale's belly.

أنا كنت مع دانيل في البئر رابضاً

وذدت زئير الأسد عنه بسطوتي

I was with Daniel, crouching in the pit,

And by my might kept the roaring lion from him.

أنا كنت مع إلياس والغيث هاملٌ

ولم يقهر الأوثان إلّا بدعوتي

I was with Elijah as rain poured down,

And he subdued idols only through my call.

أنا كنت مع فتيان بابل حافظاً

لهم من أذىً أتون نارٍ ذكية

I was with the youths of Babylon, protecting

Them from the harm of the blazing furnace.

أنا كنت مع كل النبيين مرشداً

ولما جددت الوعد جئت بنعمتي

I guided all the prophets,

And when I renewed the promise, I came with my grace.

أنا كنت حقّاً في حشى البكر مريمٍ

مدى أشهرٍ مقدارها عد تسعة

I truly was in the womb of the virgin Mary

For a span counted as nine months.

أنا كنت في مهد المغارة نائماً

وفي بيت لحمٍ كان مولد بشرتي

I slept in the manger of the cave,

And in Bethlehem my flesh was born.

أنا كنت في مغنى سليمان راقياً

بمنبره في عمر ستٍّ وستة

I ascended Solomon's sanctuary,

Its pulpit, at the age of twelve.

أنا كنت في حين قمت مجادلاً

وأفحمت أرباب العلوم العلية

I rose there to debate

And confounded the masters of lofty learning.

أنا كنت في قانا وقانا عروسها

أحلت له ماءً بصهباء خمرة

I was at Cana when it sheltered a bride,

And changed water for her into red wine.

أنا كنت للأعمى بسلوان شافياً

شفيت له من طينةٍ مأق حدقة

I healed the blind man at Siloam,

Using clay to heal the corner of his eye.

أنا كنت حقّاً راحضاً داء أحسبٍ

وغادرته منه بأشرف فطرة

I truly washed away a leper's disease,

And left him in a finer state.

أنا كنت في صحراء أرضٍ عريةٍ

فأشبعت آلافاً بكسرة خبزة

I was in a bare wilderness,

And fed thousands with a piece of bread.

أنا كنت في الجمهور إذ مس مطرفي

فتاةٌ ونالت برء داء النزيفة

I was among the crowd when a young woman touched my cloak

And was cured of her bleeding disease.

أنا كنت إذ وافوا بشخصٍ مخلعٍ

فقلت له كن سالماً حاز إمرتي

I was there when they brought a paralyzed man,

And I told him, 'Be well'; he obeyed my command.

أنا كنت في صهيون إذ كنت مخرج ال

شياطين جهراً من حشى المجدلية

I was in Zion when I cast out the

Demons openly from within the Magdalene.

أنا كنت حقّاً فوق بئرٍ ركيةٍ

بسامرةٍ أفشي خفا السامرية

I truly sat above a deep well

In Samaria, disclosing the Samaritan woman's secret.

أنا كنت فوق البحر والبحر زاخرٌ

كأني أمشي فوق أرضٍ قوية

I was above the sea while it surged,

As though I walked on firm earth.

أنا كنت في طور التجلي مبوَّأً

بأكنافه والنور قد عم صحبتي

I was stationed on the mount of transfiguration,

And light filled my companions around it.

أنا كنت للعازار في السبت منهضاً

وكان له في الرمس عدة ميت

I raised Lazarus on the Sabbath,

Though he had lain dead in the tomb for days.

أنا كنت في أرجاء صهيون والجاً

وحزت بها مدحاً بأفواه صبية

I entered the precincts of Zion

And received praise there from children's mouths.

أنا كنت أقدام التلاميذ راحضاً

عقيب عشائي رغبةً في المحبة

I washed the disciples' feet

After my supper, out of love.

أنا كنت مذ قدست خبزاً وخمرةً

فصار دمي حقّاً وجسم طبيعتي

I consecrated bread and wine,

And they truly became my blood and natural body.

أنا كنت في ناسوت آدم قائماً

بأعبائه كيما أريه مزيتي

I bore the burdens of Adam's humanity

So that I might show him my excellence.

حقّاً لقد باء المسيح برفدنا

وكان تجسده لنا بالحقيقة

Truly, Christ came bearing help for us,

And his incarnation for us was real.

وقد شده الألباب سر انبعاثه

وآيته الجلي علينا تجلت

The mystery of his rising amazed minds,

And its clear sign appeared to us.

وقد ذهبت في سر ناسوته الورى

مذاهب يرويها أولوا الألمعية

People followed different schools of thought

About the mystery of his humanity, as the learned recount.

فمن قائلٍ بالجزم والحزم والحجى

ومن قائلٍ إفكاً بسوء العقيدة

Some spoke with certainty, resolve, and judgment;

Others spoke falsely through corrupt belief.

وقد أنكر الكفار ناسوته العلي

وأصروا به كالألسن الأعجمية

The unbelievers denied his exalted humanity

And persisted, speaking as if in foreign tongues.

وقد سلَّم القوم اليهود مجيَّه

ولكنهم قالوا بناسوت بشرة

The Jewish people acknowledged his coming,

But described him as merely human flesh.

وأما أولوا الدين المسيحي فإنهم

تماروا به في حلبةٍ دون حلبة

As for the Christian faithful,

They disputed him in one arena after another.

فقد قال سيون الشقي وحزبه

أولوا السحر والكذب الردي والفرية

The wretched Sion and his party said,

Practitioners of magic, vile lies, and fabrication,

بأن يسوعاً كان بالجسم مثلنا

وليس إلهاً بل شبيهاً بآية

That Jesus had a body like ours

And was no God, but merely resembled a sign.

كذاك السميساطي يقول بقوله

فيزعم في أثنائه بالفضيلة

The Samosatene likewise held that view,

Claiming virtue in the process.

وقد قال ماني جسمه كان ظاهراً

خيالاً وما قد ذاق طعم المنية

Mani said that his body only appeared

As an illusion and never tasted death.

وشبه وقت الموت في يوم صلبه

وهذا مقالٌ مفعمٌ كل شبهة

He said death at the crucifixion was only a semblance;

That claim is full of doubt.

ألنتيس قال جسمه من سمائه

ولم يتخذه من بتولٍ نقية

Alentis said his body came from heaven

And was not taken from a pure virgin.

وآريس الملعون ينكر معلناً

مساواته للآب رب البرية

The accursed Arius openly denied

His equality with the Father, Lord of creation.

ونسطوريوس قد ضل عنه بقوله

قنومان فيه مع تثني الطبيعة

Nestorius, too, erred in saying

That he had two persons as well as two natures.

وساويريوس يقضي بأن طبيعتي

يسوع تمازجتا كماءٍ وخمرة

Severus maintained that the two natures

Of Jesus mingled like water and wine,

وقد صارتا من بعد ذاك طبيعةً

موحدةً فاحذر ضلالته التي

And afterward became one

United nature; beware his error.

كذلك ديسقوروس الغمر تابعٌ

لما نصه بل اتحاد القضية

Likewise, ignorant Dioscorus followed

What he stated concerning their union.

وبرصوم مع يعقوب ضلّا ونافقا

ونفاقهما المرذول مع بعض شيعة

Barsawma and Jacob both strayed and dissembled,

Their condemned deceit shared by some followers.

وسركيس مع أصحابه كان قائلاً

ضلالاً ومكراً إنه ذو مشيئة

Sergius and his companions asserted,

In error and guile, that he had one will.

وآنوريوسٌ فيه الرواة تخالفوا

فبعضٌ يماري بعضهم في الروية

As for Honorius, narrators differed over him,

And some contested others' view.

ولكن رأيي فيه صدقاً بأنه

سديد المعاني مستقيم العقيدة

But my honest judgment of him is that

His thought was sound and his belief upright.

وغيرهم ممن طغوا وتسوسوا

وضلوا عن النهج القويم الطريقة

Others, too, grew arrogant and schemed,

And strayed from the straight path.

فلكهم في وهدة الكفر واقعٌ

وقد نهجوا نهج الطغاة المضلة

All fell into the pit of unbelief

And followed the misleading tyrants' course.

وليس لهم في رفضهم قط مخلصٌ

وليس لهم في فرضهم من محجة

Their denial offers them no deliverance,

Nor does their assertion give them a true path.

عليهم من اللَه العلي ألف لعنةٍ

مضاعفة التعداد في ألف لعنة

Upon them from God Most High be a thousand curses,

Multiplied in number by a thousand curses.

وأما أولوا الرأي السديد الذي به

رأوا رؤية التوفيق في كل وجهة

But those of sound judgment

Saw rightly in every respect.

يحدون إدراك العقيدة أنها

مبلغةٌ عن كابري الأيمة

They define the understanding of doctrine as

Handed down from the foremost leaders,

بقولهم إن المسيح ابن مريمٍ

وإبن إلهٍ منذ بشرى البتولة

Saying that Christ is Mary's son

And God's Son since the virgin's annunciation.

وقد وحدوا الأقنوم فيه بنصهم

وثنوا الطبيعة مع تثني المشيئة

They affirm one person in him

And two natures, together with two wills.

فمتحدٌ لاهوته وهو كاملٌ

بناسوته من غير مزجٍ وخلطة

His divinity is united, yet complete,

With his humanity, without mingling or mixture.

وإن اتحاداً جوهريّاً تراهما

وليس اتحاداً في اتفاق المحبة

Theirs is an essential union,

Not merely a union of agreed love.

إلى أن ترى الأقنوم في الكل منهما

له إقتضاءٌ باتحاد الحقيقة

Thus you see the one person in both,

United in the reality of their being.

فهذا هو الحق الصراح الذي به

تعلقت الآمال فيه فسرت

This is the plain truth to which

Hopes have clung and by which they have prospered.

ونادى به الإجماع شرقاً ومغرباً

بواضح آياتٍ وصدق الأدلة

Consensus proclaimed it east and west

With clear signs and truthful proofs.

بإسناد آراءٍ له عن جهابذٍ

معنعنةٍ في النقل غير ضعيفة

It supports its view with authorities

Whose transmitted reports are sound,

ثقاتٍ إليهم قد غدا الخصم مومئاً

إشارة تسليمٍ لهم في القرينة

Trusted figures to whom even an opponent turns

In a gesture of assent to their evidence.

يؤيدهم ذاك المعزِّي لقوله

تَقوَّوا أنا معكم مدى كل حجة

That Comforter supports them by saying,

'Take courage; I am with you through every trial.'

على إسِّهِم نبني قواعدَ ديننا

كما شيد بالإنجيل هيكل بيعة

On their foundation we build our faith's principles,

As the church's temple was built through the Gospel.

فإن كان توارة الكليم تنبأت

بمورد فادينا المسيح ونصت

If the law of Moses foretold

The coming of Christ our redeemer and stated it,

فإنجيله ينبيك عن فعله البهي

وعن علمه المعلول عن فضل علة

Then his Gospel tells you of his splendid acts

And his knowledge proceeding from a greater cause.

فسل رسله ينبوك عنه مصرحاً

بتسطيرهم أقواله بالحقيقة

Ask his apostles; they will plainly tell you of him

Through their faithful recording of his words.

يبثون ما قد ناله من نكاله

وكم نال ذاك الجسم من كل بلوة

They recount the punishments he suffered

And every ordeal endured by that body.

فكانت صلاةٌ شادها ضمن جنةٍ

ليصعد فيها آدماً فوق جنة

His prayer offered within a garden

Raised Adam beyond a garden.

وكان تعريه يشير لآدمٍ

إلى سندسٍ يكسوه من نور بهجة

His stripping pointed Adam

Toward a silken robe of radiant joy.

وقد كان وسم الجلد في رق جلده

يدل على سربال مجدٍ ونعمة

The marks of lashes on his tender skin

Pointed to a garment of glory and grace.

وتكليله بالشوك يؤذن معلناً

بإكليل آدم فوق عرش المسرة

His crowning with thorns openly announced

Adam's crown upon the throne of joy.

وتسميره بالعود في حال صلبه

ليرفعه من فوق أرفع رتبة

His nailing to the wood at the crucifixion

Was to raise Adam to the highest rank.

لقد مادت الآفاق حزناً وخيفةً

لصلب يسوع رب كل الخليقة

The horizons reeled in grief and fear

At the crucifixion of Jesus, Lord of all creation.

ترى لكسوف الشمس أعظم حرقةٍ

كما لخسوف البدر أخسر صفقة

The sun's eclipse shows a great burning grief,

As the moon's eclipse shows a grievous loss.

وقد سارت الأتراح في الأرض والسما

وقد حل ركب الحزن في كل طغمة

Sorrow spread through earth and heaven,

And grief's caravan reached every company.

لما حل في ناسوت آدم ظاهراً

وأعلنه بالعار بين البرية

This happened when he visibly assumed Adam's humanity

And exposed it to shame before creation.

لقد حمل العود المبارك ثمرةً

طفا أكلها ناراً علينا تلظت

The blessed wood bore a fruit

Whose eating quenched the fire that blazed against us.

فإن كان آدم ساءه أكل ثمرةٍ

وأخرج منها من أراضٍ أريضة

If eating a fruit brought Adam grief

And drove him from fertile lands,

فيجني جناة النجح ذا اليوم فائزاً

فأكرم بها من ثمرةٍ أريجية

Then the gatherer of this fruit now wins success;

How noble this fragrant fruit is!

فإن ضاع قدماً من جرى أكل ثمرة

فقد ضاء بعداً من جنى أصل ثمرة

If someone was lost long ago through eating fruit,

Someone later shone by gathering its source.

هلم فقد نحيت يا آدم الولي

ونوجيت مدعوا إلى عرس جنة

Come, Adam, friend of God: you have been set apart

And called to the wedding feast of paradise.

هنيئاً بما قد حزته من مخلصٍ

وأنت بما قد جزته لم تبكت

Rejoice in the savior you have gained;

For what you underwent, you were not rebuked.

وسقياً لنفسٍ عادها عيد ربها

ورعياً لها إذ في العلا قد تجلت

Blessed be the soul visited by its Lord's feast,

And tended when it appeared in the heights.

ترى العلم في أثنائها كف طابعٍ

وأن الذي تحتاجه كان كالتي

You see knowledge within it like an imprinting hand,

And what it needs appears as it was.

فها الآن فيها معرب الإسم سالماً

وعائدها قد عادها ضمن وصلة

Now its name is clearly expressed and sound,

And its visitor has returned to it in union.

وقد زان فيها فعلها فهو سالمٌ

كما شانها من فعلها عند علة

Its action now adorns it, whole,

As its action once disfigured it through illness.

يجردها من مضمرٍ كان مبهماً

ويسندها في مظهرٍ كالأشعة

He frees it from what was hidden and obscure

And sets it forth in a form like rays of light.

فتعجب من أصواتها عند شدوها

فتعرب عن معنىً خفي الطوية

Marvel at its voices when it sings:

They express a meaning concealed within.

وتختال من مرح الفضيلة والتقى

كما اختالت الحسنا بأثواب بهجة

It strides joyfully in virtue and reverence,

As a beauty strides in splendid robes.

وتلمح آثار النجاة بذاتها

وعالمها فوق الحصون المنيعة

It sees the marks of salvation in itself

And its realm beyond mighty fortresses.

ترى حولها من كل عضبٍ مجردٍ

يمانٍ وعسالٍ ضوي الأسنة

Around it you see every drawn sharp sword,

Yemeni blades and spears with gleaming tips.

يذب زؤام الموت عن ربع أنسها

فلا الإنس ترزاها ولا روح جنة

They ward deadly death from its peaceful home,

So neither humans nor spirits of paradise can harm it.

فألسنة الأكوان تحمد فعلها

وتمدحها في فاتحاتٍ فصيحة

The tongues of the universe praise its deeds

And extol it in eloquent openings.

لكون علاها لم يشبه تنزلٌ

ولا عثرةٌ في الفترة الوثنية

For its ascent was not stained by descent

Or a stumble in the pagan age.

ولم يغوها بالكذب نصٌّ مصدق

خلافاً بقسر القول من غير ميزة

No supposedly trustworthy text led it astray with lies

Through a forced claim without discernment.

ولكنها بالجد قامت على التقى

بتثليث أقنوم إلهٍ بوحدة

Instead, it earnestly stood firm in reverence,

Affirming three persons in one God.

وإستفرقت في ذاته مستمدةً

سناه وذا قد أدركت في المحبة

It sought within his essence, drawing

His light, and attained this through love.

فعادت كما شاء الإله سليمةً

سليمة برءٍ لا نقيض السليمة

It returned whole, as God willed,

Whole with healing, in the fullest sense.

وأوهبها من كنزه كل نعمةٍ

وورثها العلياء أشرف رتبة

He granted it every grace from his treasury

And bequeathed it the highest, noblest rank.

عليها من الأنوار ثوبٌ مفوَّفٌ

يليه نطاق المن في كل شقوه

A patterned robe of light clothes it,

Followed by a girdle of manna on every side.

وقد شغفت في ذاته وهي دونه

تراه وهو من فوقها فوق سدة

It loves his essence, though it remains below him,

And sees him above it upon a throne.

ذهلت به عن عالم ليس علماً

بما علمته بعد بعد المشقة

Seeing him, it forgot a world of false knowledge

Through what it learned after long hardship.

فظلت بأمنٍ وارتياحٍ ولذةٍ

وفوزٍ وإنعامٍ وسعدٍ وفرحة

So it dwelt in safety, ease, and pleasure,

In triumph, blessing, happiness, and joy.

وقد شاقها مدح البتولة مريمٍ

وأعجزها مقدار مدح البتولة

It longed to praise the virgin Mary

But could not praise her virginity enough.

رقت في كمال الفضل أعظمَ رتبةٍ

وحازت فتاة الفقر أكبر نعمة

She rose to the greatest rank in perfect grace,

And the poor maiden received the greatest gift.

هل النعمة الكبرى إليها تنزلت

أم اللَه أهلها لأشرف رتبة

Did the greatest grace descend to her,

Or did God make her worthy of the highest rank?

وذلك لما حل فيها مؤنساً

وقد قبلته وهو بكر الخليقة

For he came to dwell within her in companionship,

And she received him, the firstborn of creation.

فلما رأى منها اتضاعاً وعفةً

تغلغل فيها لاتخاذ الطبيعة

When he saw her humility and chastity,

He entered her deeply to assume human nature.

إلى من أرى إلّا إلى متواضعٍ

يقول إله الكل ضمن النبوة

'To whom shall I look but the humble?'

Says the God of all in prophecy.

تواضعها قد صار علية مدحها

كذاك علاها صار علية مدحتي

Her humility became the cause of her praise,

And her high station became the cause of my praise.
