Remembering death is a death; so prepare for it

day by day, and repent if you are ignorant of it.

Whoever fears death sees renunciation and the severing of desire.

So reckon this as that; you will not neglect it.

    Not everyone who wishes for death is praiseworthy;

no, nor does everyone who longs for it understand it.

Rather, whoever sees it through God's Spirit, perfected

by virtue and love, is carried by it toward God.

Remembering death quenches my desire; and when

I had quenched it, I came toward death to question it:

“What are you? Tell me.” It answered: Listen, so you may understand me.

Death is a gate, and the abode of eternity is where it leads.

Remember your momentous final outcomes; for when you

recall them, you say, “My sin—I will not commit it.”

Die by choice, and you will become committed to death.

Blessed is the committed one, for death grants him respite.
