    Purity of soul brings neither help nor benefit

    if the body hinders the soul through sin.

    Whenever the body, dense in its substance, submits

    to a soul's chastity, it submits through God.

    It returns to what it was before the fall,

    when Adam roamed freely in Paradise.

    For our constitution is founded on soul and body,

    and it is no wonder that the body follows the soul.

    وإن كنت جسميّاً فأنت مشنَّع

    If you are spiritual, you are made godlike;

    and if you are carnal, you are reviled.

    Purity of body surpasses the soul in loftiness,

    and is loftier and higher than the angels.

    For how great the gulf between one whose nature is fashioned for purity

    and one compelled, whom acquired habit has bent!

    I speak without fear, with an assertion confirmed

    by ripe fruit of purity that supports it:

    that a pure person, in the essence of his beauty,

    is godlike, shining with purity.

    For Adam's striving for divinity led him astray, yet

    one enticed one day by purity has become godlike.

    يَخِسُّ وينمو موجِدٌ ومضيَّع

    Whoever grows in purity grows in likeness to his Lord;

    one laid waste dwindles, while one who brings forth grows.

    So do not weary yourself, you who seek chastity:

    if God does not help you, you cannot resist.

    يجود بها طوراً وطرواً يُمَنِّع

    For purity is only a gift from his generosity;

    he grants it at one time and withholds it at another.

    And the proof from him—blessed is he—is that he

    refused to make it obligatory when laying down obligations.

    I see the body tempting me with a thorn of desire,

    and Satan pelts me with a painful volley.

    فجرحيَ معْ حرقي أُريد وأَرفع

    You see me wounded and burning at once;

    so I desire and lift up my wound, along with my burning.

    For I am a lowly human being, beset by misery.

    Who, then, will rescue me from a body of death and intercede?

    I call out, and have called upon those who do not answer me,

    except you. Help me, O Lord, while my heart quakes.

    For if you wish to purify me, you are able

    to purify me, while the adversary quails before you,

    through Mary, emblem of chastity, your mother, who

    has come to be beside you, the intercessor whose plea is accepted.
