    O you who are rich in spirit, guard your treasures;

And fear for them the thieves among the sons of time.

For how wicked deceitful time is toward its people!

And how numerous are the afflictions in time and life!

And how blessed is the righteous man in it, and his striving

Is upright by the light of truth, in secret and in public.

His contrast with it has grown still greater within it,

As though the Pleiades had met the break of dawn.

As though the souls of creation were drowning in it,

In an age like a sea surging with sin and unbelief.

Yet there is a gulf between those drowned in seas

And one drowned in transgressions and guilt.

One drowned in water rises alive in hope,

But one drowned in sin rises dead upon the embers.

    If this is inevitable, then rise with us;

Let us tear wealth's robe through asceticism in the wilderness.

We entered the world naked, and indeed we

Leave it naked; there is no disputing the matter.

If you depart while your heart is where your treasures lie,

You will see what the sailor sees at the sea's confluence.

It is shameful for us to seek error as we seek guidance,

While we count the easy path better than the rugged.

Our death pursues us like a shadow,

And our ambition is fixed on life's passing things.

The world unfolds us and folds away our life,

And we have from it nothing but folding and unfolding.

Eternity follows it, while action looks

To good, then evil, in prohibition and command.

How strange, when people sleep in desire!

O sleepers, awake and join the travelers' journey!

When desire steals us away, it schemes against us

With its pleasure; game is caught by cunning.

Yet it gives to whoever loves it

And adores it, procrastination with woe and loss.

Thus you gain it when you know its falsehood,

And lose it when you do not know.

Its beginning is easy, and sweet is its taste,

But its ending is bitter, more bitter than aloes.

    أرتك المنايا السود بالأسيُفِ الحمر

    It showed you white advantages, until it unveiled itself;

It showed you black deaths with red swords.

And a hireling who takes his wages from it

Is surely like a captive it seized without payment.

The best that you meet in it is piety,

And the worst that meets you in it is what brings disgrace.

How fortunate is a person if he thinks its beauty

Ugly, and how wretched if he does not know!

Its seasons contain the bad and the good,

And how fine is building upon rock within it!

If you seek good, you attain good; and if you seek

Evil, you find it: the sword is at the throat.

Our witness is the example we have seen

In Lot, Job, and Adam, in endurance.

Adam in Paradise cast away his glory,

While Lot in Sodom clothed himself in glory.

In the dwelling of the living, a living man died,

And in the dwelling of the dead, the man of renown lived.

And Job became victorious in both conditions:

In wealth and standing, and in humiliation and poverty.

It is human reason—whether man strays or finds guidance—

That has full choice in prohibition and command.

O our days, you were nothing but a trade,

Yet you were stolen by revelry, diversion, and drunkenness.

I sinned, and resumed my sin, and found no

Deliverance for my soul, though it repented, from the final gathering.

I string within my soul necklaces of sins,

And scatter the loss of minutes from my life,

Until I turned my soul away from the paths of guidance

And exhausted my life in it, in verse and prose.

And here I am, bewildered by the sound of resurrection,

When God calls me from beside the grave.

I repent, yet repentance has no constancy

In a life where sins are like water mixed with wine.

He saw mankind on Judgment Day, with justice ruling,

And what a justice—more exact than thought!

Everyone is clothed in garments of regret

For his striving, except the one perfect in secret and in public.

How brave are the martyrs while battle rages,

Who faced dreadful death amid bright swords and tawny spears!

How blessed are the ascetics, when their striving was complete,

Who repelled the craving for pleasures with black and yellow!

How beautiful are the righteous, with righteousness their robe,

Seeking God's glory in green garments!

When the pure behold firmly established glory

Among them, they stand beside it like the sun beside the full moon,

They fashion praise made perfect when their lives were complete,

Earnestly, despite sorrows, hardship, and poverty.

And your Lord casts upon them a gaze of favor,

Because they pleased Him with praise and thanksgiving.

The wicked descend in woe and ruin

To the abode of shame's fire, in humiliation and subjugation.

As though those fires, pressing upon them,

Were mountains of lead, not mountains of rock.

They wish they had never been born, then buried,

Nor afterward been promised resurrection and the gathering.

You see them perfected in love of Him from whom there came to them

Perfection, like a moon made full on the night of the full moon.

They became brothers in grace, and men of kinship

With the Master of grace, in might and victory.

For they did not walk the path of ruin,

And were perfected through a body exalted above the stain of bondage.

And the child of man is twofold,

His doubling comes only from the womb and the grave.

His birth from the womb brings him to misery,

And his birth from the grave is for judgment and reward.

I ask You, O my Lord, at the hour of my birth

From the grave, when the dead rise for resurrection,

For favor, forgiveness, pardon, and mercy,

Through her in whom praise is fitting, in verse and prose.

    وناهيكَ من بِكرٍ تَجسَّدَ من بكر

    And for her the Firstborn of all creation came to dwell;

And what a Firstborn, made flesh from a virgin!

If you call on her one day, her tenderness will answer you:

"I am relief for whoever calls upon Mary in hardship.

Through me mankind was saved after its ruin,

And through me faith dragged unbelief by the forelock.

Through me Satan was taken, bound in chains,

A captive, with no hope of release from captivity.

    Adam became mortal through Eve,

And through me rose alive, receiving pardon from my Firstborn.

Through Eve he donned disgrace, unwittingly; yet

Through my grace he donned glory, age upon age.

How blessed is whoever has come toward me seeking,

Through repentance, pardon and forgiveness of guilt!"

I have come to you, O refuge of sinners, hoping

For your succor on the day of resurrection and the gathering.
