1. يا إلهي النفوسُ قد غالهنَّه

    اعتلال النفاق واغتالهنَّهْ

    O my God, the souls have been struck down

    by the sickness of hypocrisy, which has slain them.

  2. جدِّدِ الآن عتقَهن بعفوٍ

    وامحُ رب عنهن أثقالهنه

    Renew their freedom now with forgiveness,

    and remove their burdens from them, Lord.

  3. قد رحضن الأسى بماء دموعٍ

    وحططنَ لديك أحمالهنه

    They have washed away sorrow with the water of tears,

    and laid their loads before You.

  4. فاعضد الكسرَ من لدنك بجبرٍ

    بدواءٍ يزيل أوبالهنه

    So shore up what is broken with mending from You,

    with a remedy that removes their woes.

  5. صارخاتٍ وراكَ من ضمن قلبٍ

    موجعٍ قد فضحنَ أعمالهنه

    Crying out after You from within a heart

    anguished, they have laid bare their deeds.

  6. فترحَّم وكن بهنَّ شفوقاً

    وغفوراً يجيز أهوالهنه

    So have mercy and be compassionate toward them,

    and forgiving, letting their terrors pass.

  7. حُزنَ عدلاً جزاءَ شرٍّ بشرٍّ

    بانتقامٍ يزيد أعلالَهنه

    They justly received evil for evil as recompense,

    through retribution that increases their ailments.

  8. أين حسنٌ يزينهن جمالاً

    من عيوبٍ تُزيل إجلالهنه

    Where is the loveliness that adorns them with beauty,

    compared with flaws that strip away their dignity?

  9. كُنَّ قَبلاً هياكلاً نيِّراتٍ

    بضياءٍ ينير أفعالهنه

    Once they were radiant temples,

    with light that illumined their deeds.

  10. فاستَسرَّ الضِيا وصِرنَ ظلاماً

    ونوى ألمَحَّال فاحتالهنه

    Then the light hid itself, and they became darkness,

    and the deceiver plotted and tricked them.

  11. لَيتَهنَّ اعتبرنَ مَسكِنَ سجنٍ

    أبديٍّ لهنَّ قد هالهنه

    Would that they had heeded the dwelling of a prison,

    eternal, meant for them, which had terrified them.

  12. وتعبدن للرذائل طرّاً

    بتوانٍ يعيب آمالهنه

    And they devoted themselves wholly to vices,

    with sloth that mars their hopes.

  13. وغدَت تجري بين ظُفرٍ ونابٍ

    وولاءُ الشيطان قد مالهنه

    And they came to run between claw and fang,

    and allegiance to Satan had swayed them.

  14. ملَكَ الخصمُ ناصياتِ نفوسٍ

    هالكاتٍ أباحَ أسمالهنه

    The adversary seized the forelocks of souls

    perishing, whose tattered garments he exposed.

  15. يتعذبن باضطرامِ أجيجٍ

    وأُوارٍ يزيد بَلبالهنه

    They suffer torment in the blaze of roaring fire

    and scorching heat that deepens their turmoil,

  16. بخَطاءٍ أجزنَه من صَباءٍ

    وجحيمِ القصاص إغتالهنه

    for wrongdoing they sanctioned out of youthful folly,

    and the hellfire of retribution has slain them.

  17. وغدت وهدةُ الإياس قبوراً

    بل جحيماً تضم آجالهنه

    And the pit of despair became graves,

    rather, a hell that enfolds their appointed ends.

  18. وسَبينَ بشهوةِ الجسم شوقاً

    وغراماً يُحيلُ أشكالهنه

    And they were taken captive by bodily lust, in longing

    and passion that alters their forms.

  19. فانظرِ الآن يا رجا كل عانٍ

    بنفوس تَحُلُّ إشكالهنه

    So look now, O hope of every sufferer,

    upon souls, resolving their perplexities.

  20. جئتنا تدحضُ الضلالة حتى

    تَنشُدَ الضالَ ثُمَّ إهمالهنه

    You came to us to dispel error, so that

    You might seek the lost, then their neglect [wording unclear],

  21. بعذابٍ قَبِلتَه بسياطٍ

    وهوانٍ أزال إقلالهنه

    through suffering You accepted, through scourges,

    and humiliation that removed their poverty,

  22. وبِراسٍ مُكلَّل ذي جراحٍ

    مع مُرٍّ يُسيغُ أقوالهنه

    and with a crowned head bearing wounds,

    with myrrh that makes their words palatable,

  23. وصليبٍ علوته بامتهانٍ

    وحِمامٍ يُميتُ مَحَّالهنه

    and a cross You mounted in humiliation,

    and a death that kills their deceiver.

  24. ليس إلّاك منقذٌ من مساوٍ

    يا إلهاً قَفوتَ إيغالهنه

    There is no deliverer from evils but You,

    O God, You followed their straying into the depths.

  25. فلك المجد يا محبَّ نفوسٍ

    تائباتٍ تَفُكُّ أغلالهنه

    So glory is Yours, O lover of souls

    repentant, whose fetters You undo.
