O monk who seeks the spiritual path in fear,

As he watches for the Judge before his appointed end,

If you seek likeness to your Lord after

He has called you, obey, submit, and set aside far-reaching hopes.

If your Lord has said in his Gospel

A saying exalted above falsehood and flaw:

"I did not come to fulfill the will of my own desire,

But the will of him who sent me from eternity"—

He obeyed even unto death, crucified, and

What he did saved you only after obedience—

Then submit and obey, if you are a devoted servant,

And hasten to follow your obedient Lord.

A righteous deed cannot attain perfection

Without obeying the command of your most venerable guide.

For it is martyrdom, if you seek martyrdom,

And it is holiness and virtue in practice.

The necklace of virtues cannot be fully strung

Except with a pearl of undiminished obedience.

Believe and love; be patient, and trust courageously,

If you seek the goal of obedience that banishes infirmities.

Through it you perfect the practice of every virtue.

If your guide says, "Do it!" then say, "Yes."

And freely slay your will, just as

You freely wish to die without fault.

For supreme obedience is great in worth,

The loftiest of sacrifices before your most exalted Lord.

O Lord, grant me obedience with which to erase the

disobedience; for the disobedient is judged by what he has done.
