    My withdrawal from the deceitful world has compelled me

    to hate self-will, along with the world's temporal possessions.

    تجد ثواباً يزين النفس بالمِنَن

    Deny yourself if you leave home to live as a stranger;

    you will find a reward that adorns the soul with blessings.

    If you desire monastic life and choose it for yourself, take

    one of three aims in your homeland:

    longing for the heavens, or hatred of sin, or

    love of God—and this is the greatest of callings.

    فانحَب ونُح ثم بُح بالسرِّ والعلن

    So erase sin with tears pouring and streaming;

    so sob and lament, then confess what is hidden and what is public.

    And welcome God's bliss, rejoicing,

    and turn your back on Umm Difr (Mother of Stench), without being tested.

    ما كلُّ حُسنٍ يروق العين بالحَسن

    Be like a child who has risen above every evil deed;

    not every beauty that delights the eye is truly good.

    أو كنت ممتهناً فالسيرُ لم يَهُن

    If you are one who tests, asceticism is a testing ground;

    or if you are a practitioner, the journey has not grown easy.

    Whoever loves the Lord, you see him always growing

    in his ascetic devotion; but without love, he grows weary.

    May you be granted water, O monk whose fervor has grown

    in fire, longing, and zeal that remains unburied.
