لاnot تريحgives rest to القلبَthe heart مُدَّهْa period of time
لا تريح القلبَ مُدَّهْ
My affliction is the greatest affliction;
My hardship is the greatest hardship
It gives the heart not a moment's rest.
It does not give the heart any rest

And there are cares that are forgotten
To thank my Lord and praise Him.
Giving thanks and praise to my Lord

وعدوي الدهرُ وحده
So I stand alone in time,
So I am alone in this life
And Time alone is my enemy.
With only time as my enemy

Who will shield me from an enemy
Who will protect me from an enemy
Whose company there is no escaping?
Other than the One to whom all turn?

Will the careworn man attain sound judgment?
Will the worried one attain maturity?

So my concerns are ready
And my worries stand ready.

Their edge sharpens its edge.

Whenever we say we will rest
A greater affliction came upon me.
The greatest intensity comes upon me

Then I, too, turned against him.

I am bewildered by what has befallen me;
I am confused by what has afflicted me
My complaint is to God alone.
I complain only to God
