    للعقل والعقل لا ينفك معقولا

    Memory brings forth forms that stir the imagination

    For the intellect, and the intellect remains intelligible;

    From it, conception is posited and raised

    Beyond memory's limit, bound and unbound.

    And thought roams freely through the levels of understanding,

    Increasing imagery within the instrument of imagination,

    Until, when understanding has verified what it conceived

    In the intellect's view, separated and connected,

    Passion inclines toward it, until through it you seek

    The meaning of what had occupied the intellect.

    Thus memory is like smell, as subject and predicate,

    From its general sense, burnished and polished.

    Then conception is presented to its presenter,

    Like the eye that sees in it breadth and length.

    يدنو ويدبر مردوداً ومقبولا

    And thought, like taste or speech, is shared;

    It draws near and turns away, rejected and accepted.

    And understanding, like hearing, is content with its reasoning,

    In the exposition of knowledge, forbidding and permitting.

    Within it, the will advances toward its craving,

    Like touch, it keeps the evidence of sensation manifest.

    These are the soul's powers in the human being; if they are present

    In the intellect, they make the unknown intelligible.

    إن لم تكن قاتلاً أصبحت مقتولا

    So charge into battle against them, O monk, forever;

    If you are not a slayer, you will be slain.
