Let me be; wherever I am, my fortune is my guide.

I traverse the wilderness out of a desire for worship,

    تَخالُ حَصى أقدامِه ضوءَ فرقد

    On the back of a lean mount with bowed ribs;

You would think the pebbles beneath its feet were Farqad’s light.

I travel as though within impregnable domes,

Through the scattered dust rising above it.

I think myself motionless while it gallops,

And think my weary mount is flying, though unchased.

I did not know whether this came from my joy in my quest—

A happy one—or from contentment with my journey and destination.

I kept walking like a lizard, bewildered,

While it kept running like sandgrouse, rightly guided.

I dismissed al-Munaqqib’s words as false:

Perhaps a guide will meet you, and you will find your way.

Until the first signs of my goal appeared to me,

And I approached the ruins of the smooth-faced building.

Then I came upon a river, above which light was pitching

Domes of wishes and luxuriant bliss.

As though the water’s murmur, with shade spread wide

    Above it, echoed—by God—Ma‘bad’s melodies.

The wind had clad it in ring-linked armor,

Resembling the rose-colored robe of spring.

Its changing states chant to me as it tells its tale,

With night’s stars within it like a scattered necklace:

Joshua son of Nun once stopped my flow

Long ago, and the Son of God hallowed my watering-place.

Then he called out, finding the Son naked there,

Seeking baptism from the hand of the pure-handed one:

Do you deliberately seek baptism, O my God,

To fulfill righteousness, or for the grace of baptism?

Do you deliberately seek baptism, O my God,

To fulfill justice, or to establish sovereignty?

For before all before, you are Lord in essence,

And after all after, you are the greatest Lord.

God came to you, O John, bowing low

Before you, not disdaining to accept the baptizer.

God came to you, hidden within his human nature,

Keeping his divinity beyond all visible manifestation.

He sanctified the waters on the day he entered them,

And thus it became, through them, mankind’s finest watering-place.

Concerning them, revelation came from an exalted, truthful one,

In the Lord’s true and firmly attested Gospel:

Whoever has not been baptized with water and the Spirit

Turns back from the gardens of eternity like one rebuffed.

My yearning is for Jordan, upon whose bank alighted

God, who revealed himself above a firmly established throne.

My yearning is for Jordan, which clasped within itself

The Unique One, whose worth surpasses every peerless one.

On its bank Christ laid down his sash,

And was the finest wearer of the robe of light.

    He obeyed what the son of a barren woman had ordained;

So woe to a servant who did not obey and transgresses.

    وللشرع يقضي فيهم حُكمَ مهتد

    We recognized him as Lord, and the witnesses are three;

And by the Law one judges them with a rightly guided verdict.

For the Spirit testifies, having appeared as a dove,

And likewise the Father cries out, bearing witness to the baptized one:

This is my beloved Son; listen to him.

How lovely a voice, on which my baptism rests!

And John the prophet tells you, bearing witness:

This is the Son of God, my Lord and my master.

How blessed a Lord, a river, and a witness!

And how blessed a faith that guides me to truth!

Blessings upon John the chaste, who rose

Through his Lord in eminence above all creation.

The Son of God bore testimony concerning him,

    Its import surpassing everything excellent:

Truly, among all those born there has arisen

No prophet whose merit equals the Baptist’s rank.

Honor is due to him from everyone,

Of people and angels, today and tomorrow.

If this is the praise of God’s servant,

What share of a singer’s praise belongs to the Mother of God?

    متى شمتَه أنساك بُرقةَ تَهْمُدِ

    Here, then, is a lightning-flash that shone from the light of his grace;

Whenever you behold it, it makes you forget Burqat Tahmud.

Then I called to her, my mind bewildered:

Protection! Your loftiness has overwhelmed me; strengthen me.

If her grace does not establish me firmly in truth,

Then I am not firmly set on the foundation of piety.

How numerous the seekers, with God their desire!

Whoever strays from her strays from every goal.

    فطوبى لعبدٍ في حماكِ مؤيّد

    I came to you, cast down beneath the trailing hems of majesty;

Blessed is a servant strengthened within your sanctuary.

Oh, protect me, O Virgin, for I

Have worshipped none but you since I was created.

    وعيني وإحمي حَكِّمي ثم سدّدي

    So be diligent and fulfill; teach, then renew;

And heed me, protect, grant authority, then guide aright.
