قد حاز يوحنا الجنينُ كمالَه

John, still unborn, had already attained his perfection

John the Baptist gained perfection

When the unborn Lord visited him through His mother.

When visited by the Lord, a babe with his mother

فانهض أيا يحيى الحصور ولاتني

فانهض أيا يحيى الحصور ولاتني

واطلب إلهاً قد أتاك وأُمِّهِ

واطلب إلهاً قد أتاك وأُمِّهِ

So rise, O John the chaste, and do not falter;

So arise, O John, secluded, do not sleep

And seek God, who has come to you, and make for Him.

And seek a God who came with his mother

طوبى له إذ صار موضوعَ الرضا

طوبى له إذ صار موضوعَ الرضا

ما بينَ عهدينِ استبدّا باسمِهِ

ما بينَ عهدينِ استبدّا باسمِهِ

Blessed is he, who became the object of favor

Blessed is he who pleased the Lord

Between two covenants, each claiming his name as its own.

Between two covenants, his name prevailed

وَقَفَ النباءُ به عن ابنِ اللَه لا

وَقَفَ النباءُ به عن ابنِ اللَه لا

متأخِّراً عنه وتمَّ بقُدمِهِ

متأخِّراً عنه وتمَّ بقُدمِهِ

Prophecy about the Son of God ended with him, not

The prophets stopped prophecy of the Son of God

Coming after Him, and was fulfilled by his going before.

Not lagging behind him, complete with his steps

هيهاتِ أن تعلو عُلاهُ الأنبيا ال

هيهاتِ أن تعلو عُلاهُ الأنبيا ال

غرّاءُ أو يرقوا رُقِيه بحُكمه

غرّاءُ أو يرقوا رُقِيه بحُكمه

Far be it for the prophets to surpass his heights—

Far it is that the prophets surpass his height

Those illustrious ones—or match his ascent, by His judgment.

Vain or transcend his ascendancy in judgment

حاز السماء ومُلكَها من قبلِ أن

يرى في الوجود الأرضَ أو في علمه

يرى في الوجود الأرضَ أو في علمه

He gained heaven and its kingdom before

He gained heaven and its kingdom before

Beholding earth, in reality or in his mind.

Seeing in existence the earth or in his knowledge

وأَجَنَّ روحَ القدس حين أَجنَّه

وأَجَنَّ روحَ القدس حين أَجنَّه

رَحِمٌ جَنَتْهُ مكبَّلاً في رحْمِهِ

رَحِمٌ جَنَتْهُ مكبَّلاً في رحْمِهِ

And he held the Holy Spirit within, while he was enfolded

And he yielded the Holy Spirit when he yielded him

By a womb that gathered him, fettered within His mercy.

A womb that conceived him, bundled in its womb

متزيناً بمواهبٍ روحيةٍ

متزيناً بمواهبٍ روحيةٍ

تمَّت وما تمت خلائقُ رسمه

Adorned with spiritual gifts

Adorned with spiritual gifts

Already complete, though the features of his form were unfinished.

That were complete though creatures were still being shaped

متدجِّجاً بسلاح روحٍ قبل أن

متدجِّجاً بسلاح روحٍ قبل أن

تتدجَّجَ الأعضا السلاحَ بتَمِّه

تتدجَّجَ الأعضا السلاحَ بتَمِّه

Clad in the armor of the spirit before

Armored with the weapon of spirit before

His limbs had donned their armor in its fullness.

Limbs armored themselves with their perfection

أعني طبيعتَه لخالقِ طبعِه

أعني طبيعتَه لخالقِ طبعِه

طبعاً فجاء مظفَّراً بأَتمِّه

طبعاً فجاء مظفَّراً بأَتمِّه

I mean his nature, belonging to the Maker of his being,

I mean his nature for the Creator of his nature

By nature; thus he came triumphant in its fullest perfection.

Naturally coming out most victorious

سبق المسيحَ بنفسِه متهلهلاً

سبق المسيحَ بنفسِه متهلهلاً

روحاً وجسماً وهو داخلَ أُمِّه

روحاً وجسماً وهو داخلَ أُمِّه

He himself went before Christ, radiant with joy,

He preceded Christ himself enthroned

In spirit and body, while still within his mother.
