It is Time: if you trust it, its companion deceives you.

For its blemishes have made peace with its sons.

They feigned blindness, just as their father feigned blindness.

And a son's kindred may rightly be traced to him.

I trusted them while ignorant of their father,

Not knowing that the son harbored his father's calamities.

My friend harmed me even as I loved him,

And what a friend, whose perils have beset me!

If night's wing is dark by nature,

How is it to blame if its stars give no light?

The sea is but a deep expanse, yet

Its ships sink within it through its surge.

So too did a son of my age, when I gave him pure affection:

He afflicted me, and his calamities gave me bitter brine to drink.

Such is his nature; you must not blame him,

Even if his wastelands cast you adrift, my friend.

In ease I readied him as a keen blade of rescue,

But when unsheathed in hardship, his cutting edges were blunted.

Time refused to let its watering-places run clear,

So I said: what man's drinking-places run clear?

For not every rain quenches thirst in dire need,

Nor does every friend seek him out amid calamities.

Many a friend's outward manners adorned him,

Yet trials of him thereafter added no luster.

So I stood by him with affection until I tested him,

And saw what its seeker cannot see from afar.

    ولكن خوفَ الله يَبغيه راهبه

    So I belied my knowledge of him—he was a monk;

But fear of God is what one who fears Him seeks.

Do not marvel at one who breaks love's pledge; it is only

Time, and the afflictions within it are its scorpions.

Because of him I praised afflictions, for they

Showed me their hidden nature through a friend I keep.

How ugly are the days, whose nature is malice!

And how fine is one whose outcomes in them are praised!

O you who seek from your friend the leavings of a watering-place,

Brackish, while deceit's water streams from its pourer,

    فكم موردٍ غصت عليكم مشاربه

    Turn away from that brackish water to preserve yourself;

For many a spring's draughts have choked you!

Do not let the sons of my age deceive you, for

We find most are those whose ways have bewildered you.

You show him a gentle side in love and companionship,

But his side grows hard and harsh.

No star has shone in the sky of love

And appeared without his stars darkening it.

No kindness from him ever advanced me—the kindness of

Friends—without his shoulders thrusting me back.

Many a friend I deliberately granted my affection,

While a sword of brotherhood had its upper edge within my heart.

No trial has dealt me fairly in my love

For him, since he contends with me through it while I do not contend with him.

I would never exchange love for one like him

For hatred with which he wars against me, while I do not war against him.

Even if, on the day of battle and war's clamor, there sank

Into the hollow of my throat the spears of his injustice or his keen swords.

I took as my example the Redeemer, whom

The sons of Adam openly denied, and His loved ones betrayed Him.

He was reviled, and spite was sated on the day of His crucifixion

By His enemies; His kin once held Him in contempt.

He willingly yielded to His body's crucifixion,

With His own consent, until His companion was bewildered.

And He granted me patience like that,

Until death, so that its possessor may win glory.

My age showed me sorrow; this is the recompense of one

Who seeks to have his desires flourish through any but God.

Do not expect anyone but God to be true in love,

And the false one among all besides Him scorns your affection.

Heed me: I have experienced what you have heard.

And where is one whose experiences guide you in this?
