Indeed, what you fear at the very first moment,

O monk—rather, fugitive apart from the crowd—

I mean by it the weariness whose nature it is

To sap your strength by deceiving you, so you grow idle,

And make your welcoming abode seem terrifying,

Deliberately, so that you turn the reins and depart,

And keep blundering about, building and pulling down,

Monastery after monastery, so you are ensnared and then slain,

Whether by the keen-edged sword of despair’s misery,

Or the thrust of the quivering spear of sloth and loathing—

Its cure, then, is the labor of your hands while you pray,

Reciting the Gospels of the Most High, wholly devoted to worship.
