I see you rich in virtue, rebuking misery,

as though you were in the wholly hallowed valley.

You sway there between pride and pleasure,

like Adam when he dwelt in Paradise.

May God water our holy valley, for it is

impregnable, and now guarded for all time.

God insisted that His purpose be fulfilled

in His dwelling, through grace, love, and consecration.

He first called Anthony, that worthy man,

the chosen spiritual guide, in asceticism and teaching.

It is as though I were with him on Mount Sinai, beholding

God, revealed in the cloud yet concealed.

I fell there thunderstruck, and grew bewildered,

and that mountain crumbled, toppled to the earth.

And I espied the fire's fierce blaze, flashing and burning

its heights, and the angels there in massed ranks.

And when I advanced, begging for its radiance,

He called to me: “You have indeed perceived My fire, O Moses.

Come forward, and set your sandals aside, away from you,

for you are upon the wholly hallowed mountain.

So do not be alarmed by its lightning and thunder,

nor panic, for you are a servant and a cherished companion.

Come, commune with God in a monk's garb.”

May God guard a servant who beheld his holy Lord.

And when we communed, I fell down in salutation

to Him, and He gave me the sacred law as a code:

a rule of ascetic devotion, whose permanence He has shown us,

firmly founded on the tablets of His church.

We descended to the Holy Valley after

casting the world behind our backs, though it were an ocean.

And its monks rose there upon a towering peak

of the intelligible world, to cast off the sensible.

They build for it a monastery containing places of devotion,

akin to a shady and welcoming paradise.

They mortify bodies and give life to souls,

so that you see the dead alive and newborn.

So they will not fear devils on their path,

whenever they ring a bell in the darkness of night.

Their robes are mourning attire; upon their heads

are black cowls; that is no defilement.

Their clothes are black, and their deeds are white,

and their enviers yellow, while their own heads are pure.

Whenever the sound of their prayer rings through the predawn hours,

it banishes the sinner's despair and scowling.

When they recite the Gospel from the pulpits,

my heart sways with them, to keep the law.

So my iron heart became an iron-clad body,

and their voice became flames or a magnet.

They raced to hunt perfection, as though they were

in their zeal a falcon pursuing a peacock.

Among them you see a noble just man and an ascetic,

naked, and a blameless righteous man and a saint.

They have indeed drawn from every discipline, with wisdom

divine, driving Iblis away from them in shame.

They have indeed made the dense part subtle, as though they were

angels possessing this part in tangible form.

    God would not have them rise through mother or father;

rather, they have risen in soul, rooted in the intellect.

May favor rest upon you, O Mount Lebanon; blaze forth,

when you have gained glory and a firm foundation from your Lord.

And O holy valley, tell me:

how many monks and priests has your sanctuary sheltered?

Whenever my gaze roams longingly through your regions,

I am enamored of a slope that holds your guarded monastery.

I guard it jealously, fearing envious ones,

like the zeal of the prophet Elijah, and of Moses too.

So fear not, O monastery, happy in its inhabitants,

for valiant Elisha is pleased with you as a tomb.

When you are linked to him, he

will protect you, so you shall never be found ill-fated through the ages.

For that one is a saint, and you are sanctified,

for you are in the wholly hallowed valley.

So, O moon, you have shone from the summit of guidance

in Lebanon, within an orbit that makes your foundation firmer.

Your foundation is built on the rock of piety,

as El Shaddai built the threshing floor of Jebus.

And in you I have known the Truth, and the Truth declares

that the God of creation undertook becoming human:

    فأكرم به مولىً عزيزاً وقُدّوسا

    Jesus, who once came as a savior;

So how noble He is as Lord, mighty and holy!
