I see that time spares neither the old nor the new,

but hurries us along at Jaʿfar’s pace.

It destroyed the earth’s kings—Khosrow and Caesar—

and one day assailed al-Maʾmun and Jaʿfar.

It tore apart the followers of all the prophets,

and scattered Jaʿfar’s sons across the horizons.

You see its mirage gleaming amid the desert wastes,

and in your thirst mistake it for a river’s water.

Yet it cunningly deceives you, as once was deceived

a lover of black hair by Jaʿfar’s smooth razor.

I never ceased testing its nature as it unfolded,

and scouring every mountain and river in pursuit of it,

until I saw that a man’s natural form suffices him

without adornment, and a crust from Jaʿfar suffices for food.
