رأيتُ العلم في الدنيا سعيداً

رأيتُ العلم في الدنيا سعيداً

وغيري قال دون غنىً شقيُّ

وغيري قال دون غنىً شقيُّ

I saw knowledge happy in this world,

I saw knowledge as happy in this world.

while another said, “Without wealth, one is wretched.”

And another said: without wealth, it is wretched.

كلانا مخطئٌ فيما نراه

كلانا مخطئٌ فيما نراه

وأصدقُنا به رجلٌ تقيُّ

وأصدقُنا به رجلٌ تقيُّ

Both of us are mistaken in what we see;

We are both mistaken in what we see.

the truest among us concerning it is a pious man.

And the most truthful among us about it is a pious man.

ترينا الشمس في الآفاق نوراً

ترينا الشمس في الآفاق نوراً

ويَحجبُه غَمامٌ فاختيُّ

ويَحجبُه غَمامٌ فاختيُّ

The sun shows us light upon the horizons,

The sun shows us light across the horizons.

yet a turtledove-gray cloud veils that light.

And a dove-gray cloud conceals it.
